I got a Gateway Solo 5300 laptop from a buddy of mine and it only has a 10gb HD, I want to upgrade in the future. I was reading another topic somewhere, can't remember now, and someone was saying something about the size of the HD. I read the instructions on how to change the HD on my laptop but it didn't say anything about needing a certain one. I also don't ever remember seeing anything in any of the computer stores I visit about laptop HD's. My laptop had a caddy that the HD fits into and I wonder if a regular HD will fit in it, or does it have to be a certain size?

Actually most laptops will accept the 9.5mm and 12.5mm form factor. However I would check gateways site and see if they have a "maintenance manual" for you laptop. This will give you all the information you need.

Usually you can use any laptop hard drive. The manufacture is really not the problem. However, you may want to make sure the specs of the new hard drive is about the same as the specs for you old hard drive. Most important of these specs would be power draw. Most laptops either draw 1watt or 500mw of power. Ideally, you should want the same power consistency.

Hope this helps.
