we have a domestic cat that has bitten a family member unprovoked and hasn't had a rabies shot yet. the cat has had a history of unprovoked attacks too though, so its a little hard to assess from that. its been 3 days now and the cat seems normal, but one of the deeper wounds has swelled to an inch an diameter. i'm not sure if its anything to be worried about or not, so can anyone give me some advise?

1) Have the cat destroyed and tested for rabies.

2) Get a rabies shot.

3) Go see a doctor already! Sheesh!

Don't get me wrong, I love cats.... I just won't stand to be attacked unprovoked by one.

Well I am kinda shocked at the replys here.

rabies is actually VERY rare.. as in EXTREMLY rare.
So rare in fact that my vet advises against any cat or dog getting a rabie shot.

If I remember correctly it has been many years since they found a single case in the US..
yet many animals must die for the test.

About 10 years ago I was a janitor at the health department.... I use to see the dogs heads in the freezer that came in for testing.. yuck.

Talk to a vet about it.

Peace
