Basically, I'm looking for an ultralight 'book (12.1" TFT, ~3.0lbs, ~1" thick) that won't bust my bank account. These older ultralights seem like great candidates.

Anyone else in the crowd have suggestions, insights, reviews, or nefs to add?

How about the IBM X series about the same specs your looking for and quite a bit more rugged then most other laptops. I have a x31 and its light and easily carried in one hand the battery has grooves in it were you fingers fit perfectly when your carrying it.

I second the recommendation for the ThinkPad X series. They are the cream of the crop when it comes to the ultraportable notebooks.

The L400 and LS are great older machines, we have several at the office. Also, you can get Sony r505 series for ultra cheap on ebay. They're one of the few sony systems I'd recommend (I use one).

Nice. The Sony's don't look too bad. Not too many out there, but they're reasonably equipped. The Latitudes look like the ticket though - plentiful, cheap, and according to the reviews, reliable.

And guys, have you even looked at the pricetag on the X-series books? There is no way in hell I'm throwing down four figures for a P3-M notebook when another two bills gets me an A64 notebook. :p This is meant to be a secondary system, thus the low price tag and "older" idea. If I win the lottery though, I'll keep those in mind. :D

I have always liked the Toshiba Portege 3400 series (3440CT, 3480CT, & 3490CT). 11.3" XGA TFT (fairly bright too), 8MB S3 Savage IX/MX video (I smoothly played Wolfenstein all the way through @640x480 on a 700MHz unit), good construction, and of course 3.4lbs and less than an inch thick. The 3480's usually go for under $400.00 on eBay.
