I'm thinking of getting a new PC that will used primarily for word processing and whatever modelling program final year civil eng throws my way. There may be occasional gaming, but most gaming will be done of my other computer. Here's what I've come up with thus far:

Athlon XP 1800+ (stock cooling)
Epox 8RGA+ (will be using onboard video and sound)
2 x 256 MB PC2100 RAM (generic)
40 GB Western Digital JB HDD
LiteOn 48x24x48 CDRW
Floppy drive
AOpen QF50C or QF50A 300W case (damn I wish I can get the Antec LanBoy more easily where I live :) )
Samsung 152S LCD monitor
Logitech Access or Elite keyboard
Logitech MX700 mouse

There are a few components that I would like some advice on though:

1. I'm tossing up between the Epox 8RGA+ ($255 Australian) and the Asus A7N8X-deluxe ($339). Looking at reviews, the asus board performs better in benchmarks, but only slightly, so the performance difference doesn't seem to justify the price difference. Both seem to be equal stability-wise, though I've heard that the Epox board is better for OC (though I won't be doing much of it). Hence, choosing the Epox board sounds reasonable?

2. Samsung 152S ($655) vs LG L1510S ($550). I won't be able to afford a 17" LCD. I do want a good quality 15" though, which may occasionally be used for gaming on my gaming rig. I've heard the 152S is similar to the 152T, which is supposedly quite good. Is it much better than the LG mon? At least... to justify the extra $105?

3. I'll be keeping this computer in my room, so I wouldn't mind it if it is as quiet as possible without busting my wallet. Any recommendations here? I've had a look at the other topic about quiet heatsinks/fans, but I'm a bit limited with my selection here. Here's the biggest list of fans from a store near where I live ( http://www.ple.com.au )... I can deal with the noise of standard fans, but if I can significantly reduce the noise for under AUD $100, then it may be worth considering.

4. Any other recommendation will be most welcome. :)

*bump*

And also, is the Asus Q-fan thing on the mobbo useful? Haven't seen any review that mentioned it. Here's the description from the asus site:

"ASUS Q-Fan Technology
Constant, high-pitched noise generated from heatsink fans are a thing of the past thanks to ASUS Q-Fan?. The ASUS A7N8X Deluxe with Q-Fan? technology intelligently adjusts fan speeds according to system loading to ensure quiet, cool and efficient operation."

Well firstly, regarding the Epox/Asus dilemma, what onboard graphics do these boards come with? As it has been established that they are very similar in the areas of stability and performance, it would seem that the onboard VPU should be the deciding factor (as to whether the Asus is worth the extra cash).

I wouldn't expect you to do much o/cing, given that you won't be using the system for gaming too much. Even then...no, that's another conversation ;)

Don't know much about quiet cooling accessories. There seems to be a great deal of vacillation on the issue.

My only other recommendation right now would be to avoid WD. I have not owned one myself, but have heard that WD drives don't hold up too well. My advice is to try Maxtor or Seagate instead.

Yes, indeed. :) Thanks for clearing that up, dinde. I made a big, big blunder there thinking that the asus board has onboard video. It's a no-brainer now. :)

Malladine, I've had good experiences with WD drives, so that's why I'm sticking with them. Hopefully, it'll stay that way. ;)
