These days, I wouldn't go any lower than 3.2 MP.
If you want CRYSTAL though, try starting at 5 MP.

Also, do you care about size, features, and such?

IF size is an issue, but you still want options, then I have to reccomend the Canon Powershot S60.
I myself also have it, and I can upload some sample pics if you want me to. I absolutly love the camera, and my ONLY gripe is barreling. But that's only if you take a picture upclose... Like macro... then you can kinda notice it. Other than that, great cam.

Oh yeah, $400.

memory = 3mp
pay attention to optical zoom, NOT digital zoom.

rather then pay attention to what memory it uses, pay attention to how big the memory is and how much it costs.

Note the battery type and life

follow these 4 simple steps and you'll automatically find a camera perfect for you

optical zoom is a physical lens focusing in

digital zoom is a computer magnifying the image

optical is better

|-------------| this much better

seriously, its like 80 times better then digital zoom. digital zoom doesnt even come close. no chip can replace a physical lens.

and digicams can have both digital and optical zooms... but the better cams always have optical

for one you cant get a 10 megapixel camera that has digital zoom only... any camera going that high in the optics department will have optical zoom

and yes thats what im saying when you compare a ZOOMED image

Look dude, I just recently got a 3.2 Pentax Optio. It's a good camera and all, with a decent optical zoom (which is always better, unless you like pixilation on your long-shots) but I've gotta say, get a cameral that has as many optical options as possible.

I've (in the short time I've owned this camera) become limited byt the possible optical options on it, because I want to become a better photographer already. But I've become limited by the fact that changing aperture, flash angle/intensity and zoom is limited by what is available digitally.

If all you want is uploading stuff to a page, or printing 5X8s, then get what ever is cheapest in a 3.x + megapixel. If you think you might even get an inkling of doing more, get something better.

'Megapixel' is NOT about the quality of pictures. Megapixel = Resolution; in other word, Megapixel= the size of picture when you develop them. You really need to need more and many reviews before considering what digital camera to buy.

Nobody can give you right suggestions unless you tell us exactly how you're going to use camera.

I used to have dslr cameras as it takes amazingly good pictures under any circumstances, however it was too big that I couldn't carry them around with me all the time. So I bought a compact camera that has full manual functions, only to realize that manual functions don't do anything in a compact camera. Also, althought it was a compact sized camera, it was too big to put in my pocket. I also realized that I never use zoom. After knowing what I really need, I bought Canon SD-10 and I'm finally happy with it.

The rulus...
1) Buy a digital camera from a camera company. Don't buy one from Sony, they make video stuff. Canon has made cameras for many years and will be better.
2) For the sharpest pictures - well, not too easy to decide. It is a combination of the lens and sensor. Higher MP will help, but it is not the only thing.
3) Don't look at the digital zoom number. It is meaningless. Only look at the optical number. Remember, you can zoomm in on your PC after the pic is taken, just like the digital zoom.
4) Look for a lower f-stop number. the lower the number the more light the lens will let in. The more light, the better the picture when it is not too bright out.
5) Best source for camera info is dpreview.com

My advice -
For the not too interested in photography as art - http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canons70/
For those that want more control over the image and the option of a large flash on top - http://www.dpreview.com/articles/canong6/
For those that want total control at a good price - about $800 - $900 with a lens - http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos300d/

I would also look at Nikon and Olympus, but don't know enough about them to offer advice.

1) Make sure it has at least 3x optical zoom
2) Avoid HP and Kodak, stick with Sony, Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, and Minolta.
3) Buy from an authorized reseller to ensure that your manufacturer's warranty will be honored.
4) Avoid any and all camera websites from New York.
5) Remember to get a Hot Deal on it, do not pay retail!
6) To find the best model check out Dave's picks

optical zoom is what you have on a standard camera.

digital zoom would be like taking a picture on a normal camera, blowing the image up to 16x20, and then cutting a 4x5 out of the middle to use as your picture. you just lost most of the information captured by the camera.

Just make sure you end up getting a camera and not a video camera. I went into Circuit City thinking I was gonna get a digi-cam and ended up with a video cam, which I needed, but the picture quality wasn't as good as I thought it would be at all. PM me if you want a list of researched recommendations (if I can find it), cuz I was in the same boat as you just several months ago. You can look up the thread if you want, I think it was "Enlisting the help of fellow atoters" or something like that for the topic.
