Need some advice on buying a used PIII 933/256/133 flip-chip.

Should I buy the older Costa Rica 1.7v version or the newer 1.75v? Or does it even matter? I?ll be running it on a old ASUS P3V4X m/b. Also, does the 933mhz chip have any head room for o/c-ing? Any feedback?

That's a classic question... ;)
Maybe the newer core has more headroom for O/C...also depends heavily on board and ram as you have to go over 133 FSB. There are a lot of version...what socket is it?

SL44J 933.00 MHz 133 MHz 0.18 micron cB0 256 KB 370 pin PPGA
SL52Q 933.00 MHz 133 MHz 0.18 micron cD0 256 KB 370 pin PPGA
SL47Q 933.00 MHz 133 MHz 0.18 micron cB0 256 KB pin SECC2
SL4BT 933.00 MHz 133 MHz 0.18 micron cC0 256 KB 495 pin SECC2
SL5DW 933.00 MHz 133 MHz 0.18 micron cC0 256 KB 370 pin PPGA
SL4C9 933.00 MHz 133 MHz 0.18 micron cC0 256 KB 370 pin PPGA
SL5U3 933.00 MHz 133 MHz 0.18 micron cD0 256 KB FC-PGA2
SL69K 933.00 MHz 133 MHz 0.13 micron tB1 512 KB 479 pin H-PBGA
SL4ME 933.00 MHz 133 MHz 0.18 micron cC0 256 KB FC-PGA
SL448 933.00 MHz 133 MHz 0.18 micron cB0 256 KB S.E.C.C.2
SL49J 933.00 MHz 133 MHz 0.18 micron cB0 256 KB FC-PGA
SL4KK 933.00 MHz 133 MHz 0.18 micron cC0 256 KB pin SECC2

I think the cD0 revision was a decent overclocker...this was the only 0.18u core capable of 1.13GHz...

This PC is running an ASUS P3V4X, which is a slot 1 m/b but I'm using a 370 "flip-chip" adapter card. It's also running Crucial 512mb CT32M64S8D7E (SDRAM, PC133 ? CL=2 ? Unbuffered ? Non-parity ? 133MHz ? 3.3V ? 32Meg x 64).

If you are actually serious about overclocking... then you should just buy a faster CPU, as the difference wouldn't be that much anyways.

But really, a Slot-1 converter that supports Tualatins (or T-Celerons) would be the most performance. They generally max out at around 1.5-1.6Ghz.

dexvx: Didn't know such a thing existed. Don't know if this old m/b (ASUS P3V4X) will support that.

Can anyone throw me a link?

I'm not sure if they exist for sale anymore. ebay maybe.

I have one if you want to PM me. It's gathering dust at home.

Correction: I'm pretty sure mine is too old to support Tualatins. Maybe dexvx knows what specs to look for so I could check?

You cant buy these things new anymore... they've obviously been phased out so your best luck is just searching eBay or the FS/T forums here.

P3V4X v1.02 supports it apparently.

Although seriously, I wouldnt pay more than $10 for one of these things. But if you're wondering for absolute best performance from that board, it would be such an adapter + a Tualatin based Pentium-III or Celeron. It is a leap ahead of Coppermine CPU's.

dexvx: Thanks for the links! Hmmm....interesting. I wonder if I have the 1.2 version? Would that flash on the screen at post or do I need to check the board itself?

Ok...I do have the correct m/b version.

Ouch, non-Celeron Tualatin's are pricey!

So how much of a performance difference would I notice from a P3 933 as opposed to a P3 Celeron 1.3G for surfing and D2_LOD? I can get a 933 for less than $20, shipped.

P3 Tualatins with 512KB L2 cache are server chips. They are pretty high performing. A 1.4Ghz/512KB is equivalent to a P4-1.8 Northwood // Athlon XP 1800+.

A Tualatin Celeron at 100FSB will perform about at clock with a 133FSB Coppermine (Celeron 1Ghz/256KB/100FSB = P3 1Ghz/256KB/133FSB). But most people back then usually got a 1.0a or 1.1 Celeron and just flip the FSB to 133 for an easy overclock (works majority of the time with no tweaks).

How much of a difference? If you're just surfing and playing d2_lod, I doubt you'll see much of a difference (I went from a 700e@933 to a 1.0a@1.33 a while back).

Since a Cel 1Ghz@1.3 is old news, think I can pick one up cheap? Any suggestions where?
