Try not to accuse him in front of any friends of his, so he can give it back without losing respect in front of anyone. But make sure you talk to him before he talks to the useless teachers, they're stuck to asking in the nicest way possible only.
Confront him straight on, tell him you know people who saw him take it and to get out of school and get it back to you IMMEDIATELY before the principal sees him. If this isn't enough, outline that anything he says while you're in earshot is going to end up being heard in the principal's office, you'll make his life hell at school until you get your stuff back. If he's not smart, he can be intimidated into doing what you want.
