Need some advice for dad's basement fix home improvement project...

Can any of you suggest an audio suggestion for our basement that is getting fixed up? would it be better to get a nice receiver with a set of 5.1/6.1 speakers. How are the in-wall integrated speakers?
 
in walls are a compromise, they sacrifice fidelity for convience.

BUT, they do offer a very clean install. B&W makes some pretty good in-walls.
 
Yes. I happened upon a technique when I was a youngster that might be just the ticket: corner baffles.

I took some woofers and tweeters out of a couple of old hi-fi consoles. I took some quarter inch plywood and cut a pair of isoscoles triangles that were maybe 26-38 inches tall and 16-28 inches wide. I cut holes and mounted the drivers, then nailed these assemblies in the upper corners of the walls in my bedroom. It was kind of an acoustic serendipity; the enclosure worked pretty well with the sonic characteristics of the drivers, and while the bass was not that great, they worked very well as rear channel speakers. (I was using the early generation phase decoders for 4-channel sound and had acoustic suspension speakers on the front channels that had good bass.)
