Need some advice for 939 motherboard.

Ok, so I went to my motherboard page, it's an A8V-E deluxe. It looks like unfortunately they aren't going to do a bios update that supports x2 939 chips. So I was thinking about getting a 4000+.

This is a list of all the 4000+'s my motherboard is supposed to support.

Search CPU using: Motherboard
Type: Socket 939
Name: A8N-E

It CLEARLY shows that it supports dual core opterons, and x2's like this one: Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 3800+ revE6(Socket939) which is the 79.99$ x2 3800+ toledo core on newegg. Hope this helped, because for 80 bucks there is no reason to NOT get a dualcore

- Oh, it also shows since what bios a CPU is supported. If you got that one allready, or don't, then download the latest on asus their website, here

Actually, I am informed however I totally put the wrong motherboard. I actually have an A8V-E Deluxe, not an A8N-E doh! I edited my first post so now it reads correctly A8V-E deluxe.

So back to my original question, would the San Diego 4000+ work in an A8V-E deluxe?

Most likely. I did a single core to dual core upgrade on that board about 6 months ago. It worked, but I had some trouble with the BIOS. The CPU worked fine, but I had to try three different dual core supporting BIOS before I found one that didn't jack up the RAID 1 array the system had on it.

Weird, you would think you would just have to use the newest one and that would get everything working.

Is there a third party bios upgrade that would work with my A8V-E deluxe that would support dual cores?

I would hope that my mobo could support the 4000+ san diego, that would suck to get it and then have it not work.

The bottom line with that board is that it's a buggy board. Any time I had to change out even the simplest bit of hardware, like upgrading ram (same sticks, same timings!), I'd be trouble shooting with the thing for 1.5-2 hours. Now granted, I'm no pro, but I've never had trouble with a mobo like I did with that A8V-E DX.

I just noticed that you said you did a dual core with the same board I had. What bios did you end up using? You said you used 3 different dual core supporting bios's, did you use ones from Asus? Because the newest one I could find for that board is 1012 and I haven't seen anything about it mentioning dual core support. Are you sure it was the A8V-E and not the A8N-E?


Also would I notice a difference in games with x2? Or would only certain games take advantage of both cores? Or would I be better off with a 4000+ for gaming?

I went back and looked up the specs on that build and the board I used was the ASUS A8V DELUXE ( no -E). Given that everything I've said thus far doesn't relate to your situation, I'd say try the 1012 BIOS. Asus says that BIOS will work for every 939 CPU made, so I'd take them at their word.

Thank you very much for your replys they have been appreciated. I'm just curios where did you see asus say that the 1012 bios for my board would work with all 939 CPU's? Maybe they just did not update it but I went to here

When I selected my motherboard they did not list a single 939 x2 cpu.

I didn't. You're right and I'm dumb. I forgot that the FX-5x's were still single cores. If the upgrade is for gaming, the dual core won't make much difference anyway.

Sorry about the misinformation. I had a bit of a faceplant on this one. It happens sometimes, I'm just glad you haven't bought anything yet. Then I'd feel really feel bad.

Thanks for your replys, we all make mistakes. So I ordered the 4000+ from newegg and it's working great. I figure by the time UT3 comes I would want a faster CPU then a dual core AMD anyway as well as ddr2 ram and that will require a new mobo.

but then I read it DOES support dualcores, on a different website where someone had a similar question as yours. Next time I suggest emailing asus themselfs instead hehe, coz apparently their website contains wrong information. Coulda been running a dualcore now

Hehe, I know it's been forever but I don't really need dual core right now. I only payed 65 bucks for the 4000+ and really I'm waiting for UT3 to come out to see what I'm really going to upgrade to, most likely it will be an intel machine unless AMD pulls ahead which I doubt.
