NEED SOLUTION WITH MY TEMPERATURES

I have Intel 2.66GHz on ABIT IT7-Max2 v2.0 motherboard. I'm using regular retail heatsink and fan that came with my CPU. My temperature is reaching 160 degrees F. I THINK I NEED TO CHANGE MY FAN!!!! I'm going to get water cooling within 2 months and I need some suggestions for fans that would cool my CPU compared to the retail heatsink and fan. Something decent and decent in cost. Please help me and offer your opinions on why my temperature reached this high. I always reach temperatures this high when doing DVD encoding that would take like 4 hours or so...but on a regular computer use, temperatures are lower. Please offer opinions, thanks.

Do you have any case cooling in effect and is it effective? Did you use any ASIII or what came with the CPU? Are you overclocking?

If your chip temp is over 70C, then something is wrong with the install of the HSF. I've built countless systems with the stock P4 HSF and never seen temps that high. All motherboard sensors vary a bit but the stock HSF should idle in the mid to high 30's and really shouldn't get much over 50C under heavy load.

it may be your board.
ABIT boards are known to report temps that are much higher than what it should be

I think I saw an add that Radio Shack is having a sale on thermal sensor equipment. I'd think you could get one for under $20 bucks. I would first look at the installation of the the heatsink just to make sure. -JC

I'm on a intel P4 2.66GHz, not overclocked and temperatures on MBM are 95 degrees F for system and 138 degrees F for CPU. My fan RPM is 2428 and I'm using retail heatsink and fan. My case doesn't have exhaust in the back but 80mm on side blowing cold air in, 2 80mm in the front blowing cold air in, and twin turbo 2X80mm fan exhaust system located in my 5.25bay. I used regular thermal compound with 10% silver and put some on my CPU and scraped it off lightly with a razor blade to produce a thin layer. WOULD YOU RECOMMEND ME TO GET A NEW FAN AND HEATSINK? What are some suggestions...for now before I get water cooling in 2 or 3 months????

Well, I was about to post to ask you what your system temp was. 95F = 35C, which isn't too bad. Room temp is generally in the low-mid 20s, so 35 is reasonable. My system temp hovers in the 32-35C range, and I have no problems. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but the general rule I've heard is that you should aim for a system temp about 10C higher than your room temp. It looks like you're in good shape there.

Of course, my CPU temp hovers in the 43-45C range, while yours is... about 59C? Yes, that's a pretty big difference. Keep in mind that I also have an Abit motherboard (KG7-RAID), so you'd think that if the motherboard is reporting a high temp for you, it would be doing the same for me. Given that your airflow seems fine (both qualitatively, with all your fans, and quantitatively, judging by the difference between your system temp and room temp), I agree with NightTrain: there's a problem with your HSF. I'd guess that it's not seated right on the CPU. On the other hand, I didn't use the retail HSF with my XP, so I don't know what a normal temp would be.

FYI, if you decide to get a new HSF, here's the one I have: Arkua 7258. It's silent to my ears, and it does a very good job. 🙂

Get a better cfm balance between intake and exhaust.
When air is balanced correctly, you should not be more
that 2-4C higher case temp for ambiant.

The Abit boards do report temps high but only by
about 8C. That retail sink should be giving you lower
temps than you are getting. Try new thermal compound
and reseating the sink.
