Need software to synchonise laptop with desktop

I currently have a laptop (for school) and a desktop(for home) which i need to keep in sync as I am downloading files off both of them and constantly moving and renaming files(when I am in an anal retentive mood). What I want is a program which can compare different folders between the two computers and highlight the different files based on name and size. Currently I am doing this manually and it is getting very tedious. If you know of any software that can do this and (hopefully) shareware or freeware I would appreciate it.

BTW: I am connecting through a crossover cable.
 
Well for free you can use the briefcase in Windows. Not very convenient but it does work and its free.
