Need Software To Put Processor Under Set Loads

For a physics project, I am looking at the heat output of a transistor under different voltages (thrilling, I know). As an expansion, I want to investigate how the temperature of a CPU increases after it is put under different loads.

I have no idea of what the unit, or method of measuring the load on a processor is, but does anyone know of a piece of (preferably freeware, but not necessary) software which will allow me to put certain loads on my processor. Reading the heat isn't a problem, but I really need some software to do this.

Does anyone know of any.

Thanks in advance,

I would also recomend seti@home as utilizes your cpu at 100% while it also fills up your FSB bandwith which can affect tempurature, not tangibly much more than prime 95, but it can. If you need help finding the software or setting it up just stop by the distributed computing forum. oh and did I mention we have a team too.

What kind of CPU are you using for this?

How are you going to measure the temperature of the CPU? That's very, very important in a physics project. YOu might as well try to make it as accurate as possibe 🙂

P.S. Seti@home and Prime95 are not 100% CPu loaders. THey use 100% CPU cycles, but in order to be a true 100% cpu loader, you need to use as many of the CPU transistors as possible. In internal diode testing, Prime95 and Seti@home both exhibit 75 to 80% of the load that CPUBurn will exhibit. My suggestion would be to use all 3 during testing.

Sorry to take so long in getting back to you all about this,

I'm using an Athlon Thunderbird 1.2GHz 266FSB.

I'm going to be using the VIA Hardware Monitor which uses the "thing" underneath the processor - that's as accurate as I can get I think.

Also, I was really looking for something that would allow me to set the load on the processor, such as 20% load, 30% load, so I could see how the average temperature increaces as the load on the processor increases.

<< I have never, ever had higher temps when running any other program than Cpuburn. You can't get much higher load than that. >>

Would recommend this to load the CPU. 😉
