I am using a Barton 3200+ in my HTPC and my current cooler Text is not doing the job. What's a good, solid choice for this chip? I also tried a Thermalright SLK-800A but that was even worse.

Does that work on Socket A? All thre XP-90 models listed on Thermalright's website say socket 478/754/939/940

True. But Thermalright did make a couple of similar heat sinks for Socket A, with the name SI-97 for one of them, if you locate one still available for sale. I used a couple of Vantec Aeroflow TMD devices with good success. Quiet, but very efficient. There is no center hub for the fan motor, so the air is well distributed. The fan blades are driven from their tips. Neither cheap, nor expensive, and generally still well distributed in the marketplace.

P.S. That same (MassCool) aluminum heat sink you tried, with the name Falcon something (Falcon Rock), and another similar one as Whisper whatever (Whisper Rock), is sold by Speeze, and by Spire. I don't think much of either one, but I got several for $5 each some years back, and used them on XP 2200 to 2400 level, non-Overclocked CPUs. They were quieter than the stock AMD retail coolers, but not a bit better at cooling, in spite of larger fans.

Thanks Kiwi, I have heard the SI-97 name elsewhere too. I'm also intrigued by the Tt Silent Boost (IIRC).

I started on a DVR project a while back, and bought some parts, but TV is really bad anyway, so I still have a Silent Boost (for K7 / s462) sitting on the project table, unused. I never did even test run it to see how quiet it is.

My SLK-900a kept my XP-M @2.5 Ghz at 43C, while running Prime95, and 39C while folding. Of course, it wasn't exactly quiet.

When I couldn't find any more of those Whisper Rock HSF's from Spire for $5, I found the Xdream II for $4.85 plus $3 shipping, and bought a couple for some s462 projects, but the fans were much different than what Mwave's photo of an Xdream II shows :

Mine had an almost-clear colored fan assembly, with a unique cage appearance, instead of looking like an ordinary 70 mm box fan, the way this one does. They aren't as quiet as the Spire/ Speeze/ Masscool, but they do cool better.

I also used the Vantec Aeroflow. It was a decent cooler, not too loud and good enough for some OC'ing.
