I have an Abit KR7A-133Raid and an Athlon XP1700. Recently, I got a ATI AIW 9600 128 MB to replace my AIW 8500 DV. The original 9600 and the exchange will not POST (one long beep and two short).

I had uninstalled my old drivers in preparation for installing the new card. After reinserting the 8500, I stupidly 9again) followed ATI?s driver reinstall instructions to install the WDM drivers first and then rebooted as instructed so they would take effect, and now I can only boot to safe mode, otherwise I get a BSOD. I have tried uninstalling the ATI & WDM drivers and several Windows XP Pro repair installs. I have taken out all my cards and also tried an old nVidia video card and still get only BSODs.

If I have to do a full XP install, I think I want to try a new MoBo as the KR7A has been nothing but trouble (I have to insert the RAM in slots 2 and 3 and do a slight FSB overclock to 136 to avoid memory timing errors.

I want to get out of this as cheap as possible and keep all my other stuff as I have no real need for a faster machine. I might like a CPU that produces less heat so I can use a quieter fan. I definately want a mobo with that supports COP and has a lot of PCI slots. I don?t need sound as I have an Audigy Platinum 2 (although if built in sound supported the Audigy external bay, I?d drop the Audigy card in a nanosecond as that has been nothing but trouble also). SB support s*cks.

Despite the KR7A problems I am kind of partial to Abit or Asus. I was thinking of the Asus A7N8X. But in thinking about this some more, if I am going to spend the bucks for another mobo, perhaps I should go for an upgradeable one that may still use my old stuff, albeit at lower performance. For instance if I went for a socket 754 mobo (the DFI Lanparty?) for which the prices are comparable to the socket A's, I could get a sempron 3100 for about $100 more. Will my Muskin and Corsair PC2400 DDR RAM work? If I do the 754, then I could later upgrade to a 64 and to faster RAM over time as the prices drop.

Any thoughts or other recommendations?
