I just bought a new drive, installed win7, and now I'm doing a lot of disk transfers between my three harddisks. They all are SMART capable, but the SMART status can't be read because they are all on NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA controllers. I would really like to see the temperature of this new drive, and before I go dumping everything on it, get a SMART status reading.

-Is there any benefit from using the nvidia controller driver? On vista, I could uninstall the driver and the default windows driver would allow SMART again.

-Some way to keep the nvidia driver, but not have to download a bulky nvidia program to read SMART?

enabling ide dma transfers seems to have done the trick. I guess the bios configs are poorly worded, and ide setting correspond to sata too
