Okay I have a FC-PGA P3 chip on a slot 1 adapter so I guess that means I need to hunt down a slot 1 hsf but I see no mention of slot 1 on neweggs site. Is there another name for slot 1 or do fc-pga hsf work on slot 1's as well(cuz i see mention of them on newegg)? Does anyone remember of these old timeys?

Check the FS/T or even Freebie Forums... I've seen a few lying around there that you could get for the price of shipping.

Hmmm, maybe i have misunderstood, but from what it seems that all you need is a standard socket 370 heatsink. You are using a slot1 to socket 370 convertor arnt you? If you are, the s370 convertor should have the full mounting mechanism for a socket 370 heatsink.

Heres one here that should work: S370 HSF @ newegg

Just make sure you dont get anything too big, because you will put alot of catiliever stress on the slotket convertor, since the HSF is going to be sitting perpendicular to the motherboard.

EDIT: All the socket 370 heatsinks that are sold at newegg

Dont even bother trying something like the hyper 6 +, its way too big for your kind of setup. Something simple would be the best.

Is that the long skinny HSF that has a 40x10mm fan on it?

Allelectronics.com has those for $2.50 new, even has the white thermal paste on it.
I've been choppin'em up for NB & SB sinks. Great little BB fan, starts/runs at 5V. #CF-177.

...Galvanized

Edit...Yep! That's the one! At allelectronics it's silver at directron.com it's black @ $2.99.

If it's a zif socket processor on a slotket adapter, then you want an S370 hsf, which is the same as a S462 hsf. A lot easier to find. Be sure to get one that's not much over 60mm square, otherwise the slotket won't fit in the board with the hsf attached...

This is the slocket http://www.hardware-one.com/reviews/slocketii/images/Iwill-front-big.jpg, here is the exact hsf that is on mine Text

So a reasonably sized socket 370 hsf will fit? 60mm? That Scythe one posted above is one weird looking I don't quite see how it would go on...does anyone have anything more conventional design

yeau my temps are just spiking for no reason...it'll set at 37C(according to asus pc probe, bios reads a little higher) if I'm not doing anything, but has spiked to atleast 75C just "idleing", I guess you'd say. But when I surf and check probe it frequently spikes up 48-53C probably increasing chances it'll spike up to 75C again. I will try a new cpu monitor in a moment. I believe the official intel max temp for this cpu is 70C.

I just reset the hsf with fresh arctic silver 5...the fan seems to spin/sounds(oiled it couple months ago) as good as always...iuno I just want to try a new hsf before I question my case airflow or my application of the thermal paste.

I guess that's enough words this all probably sounds silly why with someone asking for tech support on this circa 2001 pc setup.

The alpha pep66 on your system is one of the best ever created for that application, the absolute envy of every geek of that era. The fan should exhaust air away from the sink, rather than push air into the sink- all the old fashioned alphas worked best that way.... it's how they were designed...

I'd look elsewhere for the problem, particularly to see if the sink is clogged, correct paste application, weak spring hold down on the sink, stuff like that. Try running the system with the sidepanel off to eliminate case airflow issues. And you may just have screwy software...

If you're not overvolting the processor, overheating won't hurt it, anyway. They're tough- they just quit working, and can be restarted again once they've cooled off.... they won't fry like some more recent designs...
