I want a photo viewer/slideshow program that does an animated slideshow, similar to what iPhoto does. Picasa does have some nice fade-in/fade-out effects, but I want the iPhoto zoom-in, zoom-out, panning effect. I don't know of any PC program that does this, but I would like to find one.

Hmm, I've never tried ACDsee, but I'll check it out.

I just tried Windows Photo Story 3 (free from MS) but its useless. It forces you to save slideshows as WMV videos first, and the highest res available is 1024x768 and it only supports 4:3 aspect ratio (I'm doing this for playback on an HDTV at 720p via DVI-out on my HTPC.)

Dammit, this is frustrating! :| This is just another example of how Apple makes something so simple that's almost impossible to do on the PC.

Okay, I figured out that the effect I'm trying to achieve is the "Ken Burns" effect, named after a famous documentary producer who used smart panning and zooming on old still photos to give them life during a documentary. The effect gives photos a sense of depth and motion. The problem is that most of the PC software I've seen won't do the effect in realtime. You have to render your slides to video (which downsamples the resolution) and then burn it to DVD. I just want to run the slideshow natively from the program. In iPhoto, the effect is done in realtime thanks to the Quartz rendering engine. A similar effect should be doable in Windows using DirectX, but nothing will do it for free.

The closest thing I could find is a screensaver program called Nostalgic but as a screensaver, its limited in its photo management capabilities.

Screw Linux...I shouldn't have to install a new OS for a simple slideshow trick.

Most payware programs these days do pan and zoom. I personally use Pinnacle Studio 9+, very easy to work with.

I currently have two slideshow programs that do pan & zoom effects. Arcsoft's DVD Slideshow, and Roxio Easy Media Creator 8. In the recent issue of Smart Computing, the editor's choice for slide show software was ProShow Gold. It also has this feature.
