Need simple game for two-player gaming over home network

I've made two threads like this over the past year, but I still haven't been able to find what I need.

I have two PCs on a home network (hooked together via crossover cable). What I would like to do is play a simple, easy-to-learn game with my wife, using the two PCs as terminals.

The idea here is that board games such as monopoly are pretty boring with just two players, but might work with two *human* players and a couple of virtual players. In fact, Monopoly would be a perfect choice, if I could find a version which could be played on a home network with virtual opponents.

The other thing which might work is to find a website like Yahoo games, where we can just play against eachother on the internet. Unfortunately, the free choices for Yahoo games suck eggs.

Oh, that reminds me, I have a budget of $0.00. And since I'm not permitted (as far as I know) to discuss pirating software on Anandtech, that means I'll be limited to some kind of open source or freeware software. And of course this is why I haven't been able to find a solution even after a year of searching.

Anyhoo, I know this is a bit of a tall order, but if anyone can help, I know you guys can.

Let me know!

EDIT: Oh, one more thing: I don't have any gamepads or joysticks, so whatever game I get will have to be played with keyboard and mouse.

EDIT #2: I have Ubuntu on one of my PCs, and would be willing to install it on the other, if that would open up more options.

Say, did anyone ever write a computerized version of Magic: The Gathering? I used to play that back in high school, and I think it would still be fun as an adult.

They had a CD rom version, but I don't know how many packs were in it or whether it worked on a network.

Mechwarrior is an option.
I think a number of Sierra games are available free now...

Wolfenstein 3d could be exciting..or Decent? Diablo? Doom II im sure you can play co op on that.
Scabble? Id just do some google searches and turn up some fun old school multiplayer games..
Warcraft II? Starcraft? Quake II.
Thinking of all the oldies that I think you can get for free or close to nothing

Have you checked out the "Free PC Games" thread? You could look around at sourceforge.net and see what they have.

One I use to play was Steel Panthers. How about Chess or Go. How about MUDs?

If you can read chinese, Rich 4 is a great choice. It's basically the ultimate monopoly game :) If not... Subspace.

There was a free version of MTG that came with I believe one deck of cards, and then you had to buy virtual booster packs to get more. Not sure if it's still around though.

Don't know if you're still looking for this, but if you are you have a couple options.

First, there is Magic: the Gathering Online which is run by Wizards of the Coast. Downloading and using the game client is free, but you have to pay for cards just like you would in real life. Because it's made by WotC and used for official tournament play, it has all the rules hard-coded in.

Second, there is a program called Apprentice which has a database of all the cards, and has an environment for you to lay them out in. It has full control over moving stuff from your hand to the play area, tracking life totals, randomizing cards, etc. However, there's no rules code, so it's a little bit more clunky. Still works fine though.

Third, there's Magic Workstation, which in practice is a lot like Apprentice. It provides the environment, you have to provide the rules knowledge.

Fourth...Microprose made a couple MTG games, I think I may still have one but I'm at work and can't check.

I'd recommend Battle for Wesnoth.

http://www.wesnoth.org

It's a free turn-based strategy game. The story campaigns are single player, but the developers have recently fixed some issues preventing multiplayer campaigns from working, so expect to see some in the near future. The game has multiplayer though, so don't shy away from it.

It doesn't look like much at first glance, but I was addicted to this game pretty hard for about a month solid before I had to take a break. Now I play in moderation. ;)

I miss Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games multi-player. I think you can find it for free now.

This is a good idea if you two haven't played this. I recommend one person play a paladin and the other a necromancer to get a sense of teamwork.

Age of Empires 3 is a really fun game to play over LAN. My friend and I played this for hours on end when he got it.
