We're heading to our family reunion this coming weekend.

Fried Chicken is provided by funds collected the previous year, and everyone brings a side dish to add to the buffet.

We always have lots of duplicates.

Dishes usually include: potato salad, cole slaw, deluxe potatos, meatballs (Sweedish and sweet and sour), taco salad, tossed salad, rolls, various pasta salads, tuna and chicken salad, deviled eggs, etc.

I'm looking for suggestions for something different to take this year.

It needs to be something that can be prepared ahead of time, served cold, or warmed up in a crock pot at the hotel... the park doesn't have a kitchen.

As far as desserts go... I'd like something that can stand up to the heat ... lots of people bring pies/cakes etc that melt in the heat.

Looking forward to your suggestions.

How about preparing a big bowl of fresh fruit, watermelon, cantalope, grapes, peaches, pears, etc. nicely chilled with maybe a dip.

Monkey Brain, I know it is a main dish, but I think it would make a great appetizer. Serioulsly, buffalo wings serve 'em hot/cold, whatever every one loves 'em.

Apple cobbler, or some variation on that. Works well served hot, cold, room temp, with ice cream is a plus. Just make a big pan of it.

side dish: jasmine rice pilaf with carrots, peas, green peppers and onions (I get the rice from trader joes and you can get some good seasoning that goes with it)

dessert: angel food cake w/whipped cream and strawberries

LOL... ok the cakes themselves don't melt... but the frosting does.

The reunion takes place in a park just outside of Canton, OH... projected temps for this weekend are the mid-80's, but have hit mid-90's in the past.

We typically get 100-150 people (including kids), but my side/dessert doesn't need to feed everyone. :)
