You really shouldn't use Cat5/5e shorter than 12 inches. It will cause a significant amount of feedback that could make the connection completely unusable. Even at 12 inches you probably won't get the speed that you'd expect from a proper length cable.
For really short runs (I have some that could connect together with 4 inch cables since they are just patches between stacked routers and switches), I use 3 foot cables and curl them up with twist ties so they are out of the way. It keeps things clean and I don't have to worry about cable runs being too short for Ethernet specs...
Yes indeed. I tried testing short cables with a $10,000 lucent certification tester, and they all failed when shorter than a foot. Most failed between 1 and 2.
You can tie 3' cables up nicely with those wire twist ties.
