Hey guys, im wanting to build a server. I need some advice on what i should buy. im going to use this server to host a TFC server(game), an FTP server, and maybe my site. I have DSL (700 up/300 down). Can u guys please give me some advice here!?!

Thanks

Have any old parts? TFC is not a demanding game. Go something simple like:

Epox via DDR boar w/ 512 megs DDR
2 60 gig IBM 60GXP hard drives (or a scsi raid 5 setup)
cheapest agp card you can find.
t-bird 750 MHz.
350 watt PSU
Antex case of some sort.

Something like that would work pretty good for ANY size TFC game and give you some room for the future.

Ohh one more thing...I already have HD's (ATA-100, 7200rpm...about 330gb's all together!)

Thanks

ps. is 512mb of ram really enough???

256 might be enough. Hosting in TFC or CS with 32 people takes like 50 megs. Give windows 128 megs to live in. That is well under 256 megs.

Your DSL will only allow 10 players at stable pings. I know alot about running HL servers (CS mostly) and a 300 upload speed will get you 10 players.

-Edit-

Sorry, I now see 700 upload. Me can't read🙂 Ok, well a 700 should allow 20 players easy. Hope it goes well for you. You could get away with Duron700, 256MB RAM for it. 512MB would be much better though.

<< Actually, my Half-Life takes up to 75MB when I get out of a client net game. >>

When I PLAY counter strike it takes up 170+ megs. When I host it takes 50-60ish.

Yah no need for 1 gig of ram 😉 Anything over 256 (512 for SURE) will not be used for what you want to do with it.
