im tryin to put my computer together but my sata hard drive is giving me some major problems, i think. I got a Hitachi 80 gb and an ASROCK mobo and have been tryin to load winxp on the Hdd for 3 days now, i have run out of ideas.

at first i was finally able to get it onto the hd and after all the files were copied onto the hd it would say i needed to restart my computer and setup would continue from there, yeah yeah SOP right? wrong. every time it would restart it would like totally forget that i had loaded XP onto it or sumtn and i would have to go through the whole process again.

Now i am havin even more problemms. now i get this message as soon as i boot up and it says
"windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware config problem. Could not read from selected boot disk"

from what i been reading elsewhere i am assuming that this is not a good thing. i dont know what the problem could be, im not OCing at all, my psu is fine, and my winxp copy is legit. is my hdd busted or what? could somebody please help me out i really need some help.

thanks alot

The motherboard is evidently not set up to look to the SATA drive as a boot device. Windows Setup sees it, and does its part, but when that first reboot comes, the mobo's not trying to use the SATA drive (or its controller) as a boot device.

So go into your motherboard's BIOS and find the Boot Device menu, which may be in a section called BOOT or may be in Advanced BIOS Features, the most likely two. Make sure that the Hitachi will be the next boot device after CD-ROM and then save those changes and try again.

thanks for that help, but im still having the problem that all i get is a message that says

"windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.
could not read from selected boot disk"

this is the main problem i am having right now, of the many that i have had so far.
i can't get past this

What is the selected boot disk, in its opinion? If it's aimed at a PATA drive or a floppy/Zip drive, then it needs the boot-device order re-arranged. BTW, is the SATA drive the only drive in the system right now? And what exact motherboard is this?

its a P4V88 ASROCK and the only hdd i have in there is the sata drive. ill try to mess around with the boot orders and try diff combos. mayb ethatll work. HOWever I did fix the sekected boot disk problem but i am still experiencing the problem of it postinng back to installing windows after each restart.
