I need to store some of my stuffs/household items and have some free space in my room/house.

Just need space and no need of climate control.

What do I need to look for a storage space? Never done it before. Any advise, recommend? TIA.

Not that much to worry about.

First, can people get to the storage units without some type of security system? Some places have a gate which can only be opened with an access code. Others don't, and anyone can drive right up to the units. Obviously a gated/access-controlled system is better security for you. You are responsible for insurance. Some places are actually inside buildings - even better, since it would have better climate control. You probably need to give some consideration to climate control unless you're only storing a rock collection. Outside units that will endure high heat and humidity can mess your stuff up.

Compare long-term rates to the month-to-month rates.

Use pallets or something to keep your belongings off the floor in case it gets wet.

Think about what you might want to retrieve out of storage and keep that near the door so you don't have to unload the entire unit to get something.

You might think about container storage. The company drops off a heavy steel container complete with a good lock. You can get them in a number of different sizes and they come and pick it up and store it at their place or you can just leave it at your house.

If you are in a house with a garage, and the rafters are open, slide a couple of sheets of plywood up in the big open areas of the A frames. I did that in our garage, and was able to put all of our crap we had in storage up there. Beats having to pay the 40$ a month bill for a storage unit.

If you rent a storage unit, check out the climate control.
If on the first floor or pallet your stuff, just in case.
Check the lighting - how well you can see inside the unit and is the lighting on a timer?

Kranky - I probably won't need climate control if the price is higher.

Magnus - can't do the container at the house

Rama - don't have any spaces between the house and garage

Common - I will check the light

Thanks for all the comments so far. Anymore?
