Need Router and Cable help....

My friend has a D-Link DSL/Cable 4-port router, and Earthlink Charter Pipeline Cable Internet. we walked through the router setup, but whenever we try to connect to the internet, we get,"finding www.earthlink.net," or,"detecting proxy setting..."

The routers built-in utility says the modem is active, but nothing is connecting.

What can I do?

if you are going to reply by email email me at vfxraven19@hotmail.com

that sounds like IE settings, goto, Tools> Interner Options> Connections, then LAN settings, UNCheck everything.. try that

I had this same problem with a Linksys router and @Home. The @Home software installation does enable the proxy, and in fact, does not allow you to "deselect" it. Every time I would startup IE, the proxy would be "rechecked". I would get the same message you saw, and no web pages would load. Maybe the Earthlink software is doing the same thing.
Linksys tech support sent me a procedure to bypass this, but it required manual entries in the registry, so I was reluctant to try it. What I did was reconnect my modem to my first PC, then download and installed Netscape. I reconnected the modem to the router, then the PC to the router, launched Netscape, and - voila - it worked. I ran that way for about a year. When I put in a new hard drive in that computer, I reinstalled Win98 and IE, and everything worked fine.

The other thing you could do is uninstall the @home software. You don't need the software to run the service... all you need is your network name, and enable DHCP. The only real advantage to the @Home software is using thier browser for members services and such.

Haven't touched the @Home software that came with my package, and works fine.
