Contemplating buying this for my bros PC. He has some SDR DRAM memory and wants an option to upgrade to DDR later. Also he will not be tinkering with the PC or anything but STABILITY is the prime concern here.

As long as you use a good power supply and RAM I think you should have no problems. Lots of different opinions on this mobo though.

I recently blew up 2 functional K7S5A.

Is this board really picky with power supplies?

I built 3 systems so far. One for my friend that has been running for more than 6 months without trouble. I had one for my sister running for 6 months too, but I recently swapped some components with my other computers and the thing refused to boot since then.

Just last month, I killed another K7S5A for power issues too. It worked fine and as soon as I modded the PSU with a quieter fan, the PSU sparked and smoked, and took the Duron and the board with it. :(

Don't pair it with the higher end thunderbird (1.4ghz especially) because it doesn't work correctly most of the time, unless the newer revisions of the board have changed. I'd avoid going with a 1.33 or a 1.4 ghz Athlon (tbird) and an XP or duron instead, less serious problems with those combos, nothing unfixable like the tbird problem (I have it, and I have to clock my tbird at 1050mhz to make sure there isn't data corruption.... it kinda sucks)

But other than that its a great board, onboard LAN is great too, the only onboard thing I think I'll ever use.

Very good board and especially for the price! I have been using mine 24/7 for 5 months now! I had some initial problems, but after a simple bios flash I was ready to go!

Excellent board , for me at least.

I hear everyone bitching about PSU's all the time, but mine is running on a POS 250w.

I got this sorry excuse for a motherboard this past week. Huge problems with 1.33 Athlon. Going to RMA and cross my fingers I don't get another dud. If I were you, I'd spend an extra 20 bucks and save yourself a LOT of headaches and wasted time. For comparison, my Iwill KK266 booted up the first time and it has been perfectly stable for months.

I built a system with this mobo and a 1.4 T-bird back in September. Aside from a lil head-scratching when I put the box together (mebbe 3 hours in stead of 1), the system has been fine since. I gave it to my sister for Christmas and she hasn't complained to date. I bought another K7S5A to pacify me until I order my dual Athlon board.

2-for-2 here.

Great mobo for the price! Got mine working at 150/150 (Athlon XP 1600+ @ 1575 MHz) with the all overclocking BIOS from ocworkbench.
