Need replacement ink. I'm scared about buying remanufactured cartridges.

My HP Officejet is low on black ink.

I used to get 3rd party ink for my Epson printer, but I found that after a period of non-use, the ink actually dried and plugged up the nozzles in the printer itself. Afterwards, NO cartridges could work, and the printer had to be scrapped.

Anyone have any recommendations for 3rd parties that have quality inks that will NOT do this?

To fuzzybabybunny,

First one must understand that inks have limited shelf lives---even quality OEM cartridges usually list a 2 year shelf life---as will many quality refill inks. But you likely plugged up your Epson with a lower quality ink---but there are websites that review inks and post user experiences---the nifty stuff forums and steves digicams are just two such sites.

Second one must understand that there are two basic ways to mount a printhead---the way mostly used by HP and Lexmark---where the printhead is on the cartridge itself---or the way used by Canon and Epson---where a higher quality printhead is on the printer and the cartridge is basically just an inktank. One of the curses of an Epson is that their printhead is prone to clogging and is not easily user removable or cleanable---and Canon printheads are easily user removable and cleanable---and far less prone to clogging. which explains---even in this day and age of chip---why the Canons are the photoprinter's #1 choice. And those of us who still have non-chipped Canons enjoy dirt cheap printing through refilling or the use of pre-filled cartridges.---that can offer saving of 7x up to 15x over OEM cartridges with absolute safety.

The curse with the printhead on the cartridge design is that the user is forced to re-use a cheap and not so long lasting of a printhead---even if they refill their selves using quality inks.
But if you use pre-filled third party alternates---your savings are seldom over 2x.

All printers except Epson use print heads with thermal nozzles and generally don't have the infamous clogging problem of the Epson printers. This problem is largely due to the colder nozzles (piezo effect) that epson uses in combination with all inks being pigmented and extra fast drying. If you're at all slow on changing epson carts, you're risking a clog.

. Some OfficeJet AIOs (like the 3310) have separate ink tanks that have been cloned. So you should have no problem there. But when it comes to refilling HP integrated-head carts, it's best you do it yourself so you know how many times the cart has been refilled - you have no way of knowing the age of comercially refilled carts. You can generally rely on getting at least five refills on an original cart. Go to nifty-stuff.com to find out reliable and compatible refilling inks.
