Need Replacement HDD... Maxtor 30GB For $100.00 Sound OK?

Got a 6GB Quantum that's headed south. It's also out of warranty. I'd like to slap a replacement in here while it can still spew data. Just about to pull the trigger on a Maxtor ST0153000U from Staples for $99.98 after $20.00 coupon is added.

That looks like the sweet spot to me at the moment. Any suggestions for a better deal before I buy this? I was kind of curious about those quiet Fujitsu drives. Should I look more into those? BTW, I'd rather spend less than more if possible.

Thanks!

I know you can get a IBM Deskstar 60GXP 40GB 7200RPM from Newegg.com for only $105.00 plus shipping. For only 5 dollars more and no rebate hastle you get 10 extra gigs, and the extra shipping cost is probably close the 6.00 sales tax you'd get from buying from staples. If your not interested in buying online, 100 dollars for a 30GB drive is not bad at all.

i have them and like them. only alternative might be the ibm 40 gig 7200 rpm at newegg for 105$ (9$ shipping). depends on if you have to pay tax at newegg or not. both have a 3 year warranty.

One more thing, the retail Maxtor comes with a 80-connector cable and mounting hardware. I think the IBM from NewEgg is OEM so it doesn't have these things. But still, it is 40GB compared to 30GB for about the same price.

Go with the IBM Deskstar 60GXP 40GB 7200RPM from Newegg

I've got one and it rocks !! So fast and soooo quiet !

I picked up a Maxtor 30 gig drive from Staples myself and I really like it. I was happy to get mine for about $100 or so after coupon and still think it's a bargain for a retail packaged drive. BTW, with staples, the coupon is an instant discount, so there is no waiting for a rebate. I think there is also a $30 of $150 coupon around somewhere, so if you could pick up $10 worth of paper, CD media or something, the 40 gig approaches the $110 price range.

Great suggestions! I didn't see any replies right away, so I went ahead and got a Maxtor 40GB ST0154000U from Staples. Got them to match Best Buy's $129.99 price, then take the $20.00 coupon for a total of $116.31 shipped. It will be here via UPS on Thursday. I don't know why they aren't using their own truck.

I'm surprised that IBM is available that cheap. I think if I hadn't been so impatient, I might have grabbed that one. That'll teach me! 🙁

But, Thanks Anyway!

I think you got a great deal! You get the ATA66 cable and the mounting stuff rather than just a bare drive.
