hi all, need some advice on a replacement for a GT240 in an htpc as it seems to be struggling with madVR/LAV playback recently. i guess i would prefer nvidia for LAV CUVID, but i don't particularly care which camp as long as it performs. is the GT430 still decent? or radeon 6570? anything newer? thanks.

If you game at all then GTX650 or higher, no gaming then GT640 for nvidia.

The 640 and 650 are the same GPU, but the 650 gets DDR5 while the 640 only gets the slower DDR3.

For AMD the 7750 can be had cheaply. The 6670 is also cheaper and would be faster than the GT240.

Whats your budget?

He already has a gameing PC.
He just needs a small video card for a HTPC.

Newegg has 6570's down to about 40$ after rebates.
Which should be strong enough for HTPC use of most people.

Those are like 80-90$. Might as well get a 7750 then.

thanks for the good suggestions guys. i'll do some reading up on these models. yea, about $50 would be all i'd like to spend, but if there's some super awesome feature or significantly better day-to-day usage that warrants up to $75, i'd consider it.

so after some digging i've been finding there are 1 GB and 2 GB versions of the 6570. would the extra gb of vram improve performance significantly in this intended use?

No. Usuaully the more ram can be slower then less ram, esp for DDR3. They have to use slower ram to get it higher sometimes.

Now if it was GDDR5 then yea 2gb > 1gb, but we are talking about a lower end card with DDR3 so go by price.
