title says it. Sound like my video card fan is dying and time to replace. Do the Radeo X800SE cards run hot, should I be worried?

You should get Catalyst Control Center if you don't already have it, to monitor your GPU temps. There are other temp monitoring programs available, just google them.

If you are happy with the x800 and don't want to upgrade/spend any money, here's a list, read the reviews and pick one that fits your budget:

Heck to be honest, this is probably money better spent and an upgrade from your x800SE:

Just verify your Dim 8400 has a PCI-e slot, I believe it should but never hurts to check.

X800 cards do run a bit hot.

If you replace it, do a real upgrade to something like the HD 4650.

With an HD3450 you'd be taking one step forward and two steps back, in various circumstances.

Link to 4650 seems to be broken, here is the link he was intending:

If you don't mind spending the extra $20, this is definitely a step up!

I myself, went with this for under $100:

Actually, here's the best deal right now to replace that x800:

Gigabyte 4670 $80 - $30MIR

$50 with free shipping? For a card that probably uses the same or less power than your x800se and will tear it up in games and anything else you care to throw at it? Yes please...

P4 3.2GHz will be a huge bottleneck for the HD4670, such that there would be no significant difference between it and the 4650. And who wants to wait for a rebate in these economic times?

Agreed, Denithor's head/heart are in the right place, plus this may buy you a little extra time before your next GPU upgrade depending on your needs in this area. But as far as I am concerned Rebates by mail are worth $0. My best friend used to work for a rebate fulfillment company and he said they would just chunk them sometimes, other times just let them pile up for a few months before any looking at them. In my opinion, there like telemarketers, except that you actually want to hear from them.

And if I am spending $80 then I would go with... well the 4830 that I went with for $90

If you want to be really cheap, you can just slap an 80 mm case fan over the heatsink on your X800, and keep it in place with some strip ties. Or, you can probably fix your exisiting fan. If you remove the fan, there will be a sticker, which goes over a plastic cover over the fan motor axis. Remove the sticker and plastic cover, and place a drop of oil on the fan drive axis. Then replace the cover and sticker - I've made many a fan good-as-new doing this. I usually use gun oil (I don't have any guns - but gun oil works better than other oils at this). You can get Rem Oil or Hoppe's oil at any Walmart (at least here in Colrado) or at Big-5 (used for paint-ball gun cleaning).
