Need removable storage device at approximately 100MB

I need a removable storage device with about 100MB of storage space.
I can't use zip because of my VIA chip based mainboards; they're just incompatible.
I have 4 NEC Zip100 drives and 3 KT133A and 1 KT266A mainboards to prove it.
Now I need something else that does work on these motherboards.

Suggestions please.
Thanks.

You could get a pen drive usb hard drive at 128 mb. Very small, check it out at new egg they have a picture of it.

Damn! That is about the coolest little device I think I've ever seen.
How long have they been out? Are they reliable? How about those generics offered at Newegg?
I'm gonna have to start a new thread or do a search about those things. If they're as good as they sound, I'm sold.

Thanks, ray24k.

I've got a Pendrive 128mb. Been using it for a while now and I can safely say its the best computer related peripheral I've bought in a long while.

Most pendrive should be plug & play.. meaning that on Win ME+ OS, you won't need to install driver. I find that 128mb is more or less enough for my needs.. but I do wish for a 1gb version now and then.. 😀
So if you can spare $150, get 256mb version.

There are fair bit of CF/SM MP3 players around that doubles as a portable hdd.. similar to pendrive. Might be worth a look.

If you've got the drive bay space, one of the little docking ports that allow you park a HD in it might be the way to go. You are not limited to by speed limitations like USB/Firewire. Prices start at about $20.

Times like this, I'm sorry the SuperDrives never got as popular as Zip drives. And they'd take regular floppy media as well - so much for that. (Disks were 120 MB, BTW).

Personally, I'm somewhat glad that the SuperDrives didn't take off. Throughout all my years, I've never had good luck with floppy media; it always seems far too willing to lose data. On the other hand, ZIP disks have proven to be more sturdy, and more resiliant to losing data. It's really a moot point however, CD-RWs have more or less beaten the pants off both drives.😛

I'm not sure what your problem is with your zip drives, I have used many zip drives with VIA boards without any problems. I curremtly have an IDE NEC Zip 100 on my Abit VT6X4. I have used both internal and external (USB & Parallel) on all sorts of VIA boards. I have noticied that actual Iomega drives do not need additional drivers installed (they use the win drivers), the NEC requires me to manually install the drivers.

How about just putting in a CDRW drive?

birddog: ditto

I have a 100Mb USB Zip drive attached to my QDI Kinetiz 7B VIA motherboard, never any troubles with it at all. Windows XP Pro, Duron 700, 256Mb RAM, stable as a rock.

I understand your frustration with VIA and Zip, but have you tried a PCI ide card? I've found that most problems with my KT133A motherboard can be bypassed by using a PCI adapter.

MWave has a Promise ATA66 for $18. It's certainly a cheaper thing to try than a solid-state USB drive.

A cheaper (and more versitile) alternative to a pendrive would be a 128mb CF card and a USB reader. You could use the card in a digital camera as well. Or, you could go with smartmedia and have the ability to use it in digital cameras and mp3 players as well.

Buy.com has a sandisk reader (pm me for the link, i don't have it offhand) that is plug and play with XP machines (I didn't have to install a driver). Its not as convienent (cause you've got to carry around a reader and the card), but it's much cheaper then the pen drives.

Not to say that all VIA chipsets are created equal.

Birddog,
your VIA based mobo is for a different chipset. I'm using both the KT133A and KT266A chipsets and both with W2K. Neither could use an NEC zip100 without hanging my system.
I was planning on returning the zips for a Pen Drive but maybe I should get that PCI IDE card.

kgraeme,
Do you know if the Promise ATA66 will work in the Iwill KK266 or Soyo Dragon Plus motherboards?
Only the Soyo has built in raid.

Well I won't guarantee that anything will work in this board. However, it has proven to work for some people. The controller I mentioned isn't a RAID version, it's just a standard set of ATA ports.

BTW, I have the KK266-R, so I have the RAID. Boy was THAT a waste of money! I'm actually in a similar situation to yours. The USB went out on my board and I'm trying to decide between a warranty exchange (cost of shipping and long distance tech support calls), PCI USB card ($30-$50), or a new motherboard ($300 after new DDR memory). The question I keep asking myself is how badly do I want to keep this board?

I don't know much about IDE controller cards, but since I usually buy from Newegg, their cheapest Promise ide controller card is the Promise Ultra100TX2 Controller Card for $22. Is this too much for the zip100 do you think or should I get the PROMISE ULTRA66 PCI ULTRA-ATA/66?

I just put together a XP1700 / Shuttle AK31A (KT266a) system together. My NEC internal Zip 100 drive works perfectly using the standard microsoft drivers in windows 98se. I think the problem you are having with yours may be with window 2000 & not the motherboard/chipset.

Agreed - Iomega internal zip works fine with my a7v.

Have you thought about getting a usb zip drive?
