I'm getting my dad a burner for christmas. I was thinking about the Lite-on as its the most bang for your buck, but I have only used an HP 8110 4x which has never given me problems and is still working like a champ. I also hear good things about Yamaha and Plextor, but can't decide. I need the most feature balanced and reliable burner, and would like to keep the price low. Newegg has Lite-on burners for $82 for 24x and $70 for 16x. Anything will be fast enough for him, and I doubt he'll be burning any games so what do you guys think? Is Lite-on good enough? Thanks, I want to order quick before I blow all my money.

I love my lite-on 16x, and i know a lot of other people who have had no problems with their 16x or 24x lite-ons

you really can't go wrong for the price...i don't see much reason to stick with plextor anymore...

If you are looking for reliability don't look at Liteon.(I own one I know) They are cheap, but when they break down you are S.O.L.
Liteon tech support is nonexistant. I know I can't get them to fix my burner.

H.P. Ihave had good luck with them and they have great support for their products.

whatever you decide good luck..

I like the Lite-Ons and the Aopens. They are very attractively priced too.

Another vote for Lite-On. I've burned about 60 or so CDs with mine so far, and not a single hiccup has occured.

I got the Lite-on 24x. I thought that for the price it can't be beat, Newegg $82 + $5shipping. That was even for the retail one. If it goes bad, i'll either get a new one because it was DOA, or by the time it dies, I'll get a new one for the same pricew. Still cheaper than the plextor and HP i was looking at.

Thanks guys.

I'd go with HP or Plextor if you wanted the utmost reliability at any price point. The LIte-On burner is very attractive considering the price it retails at though.

<< Don66 - why don't you try talking with the vendor? >>

I did, but since it was a gift and I have no proof of purchase (Uncle can't find the reciept) they won't take it back..Which I can understand.

But Liteon won't even answer a problem report. I tried to get them to rma it they won't..It came in a retailbox:(

I don't care how cheap they are(price wise) they have lousy tech support. If you buy a burner you expect it to last longer than a few months.

Looks like Plextor is getting some hard earned cash after Christmas..

Plextor is the most realiable burner out of all the companies.. i had a yamaha 4x scsi and it was horrible, i never once had a problem with my plextor plexwriter 12x and i burned over 300cds with it.

I have a Yamaha 16x10x40 CD-RW drive and I have had nothing but problems with it. I had to send my original drive back to them because the Cds that i put into it was scrapeing the laser lens. then I had to send back the drive that sent back to the first time because the drive wasen't reading any cds so when I took it out of the computer to send it back the laser lens completely fell out.

They only good thing about Yamaha is their customer service. They have responded to every email i have sent them and give out RMA numbers fast.

Hope this helps

I have heard decent things about Ricoh drives, and just installed an IDE TDK 24x10x40 in my mom's system and it works like a champ!!

Plextor's cost more but I believe are still considered to be the best.

Ricoh drives are the sh!t.. I'd take one over a Plextor any day.. I don't like overrated products! (Plextor is too much money!!!)

I found a Ricoh 20X CD-RW for like super cheap at a place nearby, i am very much thinking of getting this drive to replace my Ricoh MP7120A. (12X10X32)

I also have an LG drive at work, very very nice!, very quiet, smooth, seems to read everything very well.. well rounded all around, i like it alot. it has built in hardware induced burn proof.. great drive (it's a 16X10X40)

ditto, ditto. I put Lite-ons in all the computers I build, and I've never had a problem.
