need recommendations for Hotel in Las Vegas

I am going to Las Vegas and I could sure use some recommendations of a decent hotel to stay at. Preferrably on the strip, or close to it. I have a preference for sights/attractions over gambling, so hopefully a hotel that offers a lot of entertainment at a fair price.

Holiday Inn. Nothing fancy, but affordable and about as clean as the more expensive ones.

We like staying at Rio Suites, bit off the strip, but they have a shuttle bus. Large rooms for the price, and a nice view of the strip, if you get on that side of the building. Also have the BEST cocktail waitress costumes
They also have a highly rated buffet, some goofy ass Mardi Gras parade thing every night, and one of the most popular nightclubs in town .

I'm pretty fond of the Rio. It's not "on" the strip, but it's close enough, and there are free shuttles to The Mirage/Treasure Isle.

The Rio caters to Adults, has a great pool area (with a sand beach), has some of the best restaraunts in town (...like 13 restaraunts), all the rooms are suites, the casino is excellent (and spacious), pretty good comps, a huge spa, and one of/the hottest night clubs in the city. They have two huge buffets, one is a seafood buffet and s'posed to be excellent (especially for a buffet).

If you're looking for decent & cheap, you won't find it on the strip. Check out The Orleans. Nice place, pretty good casino, decent food. Another place would be Palace Station (or any of the "Stations, acutally), again, not on the strip, closer to downtown, pretty cheap, casino is so-so...depending what kind of gambling you like to do. The Orleans and "Stations" are "locals" places....nice enough, but still (relatively) inexpensive. Palace Station is reputed to have "The Best" (according to some third party ratings) buffet in the city.

My wife and I stayed at the Stratosphere which is on the strip but not in the heart of the strip. But busrides are cheap in Vegas anyways. It was great! Cheaper than Mirage etc. but not as nice. Casino area was good, but we're not big gamblers, only played the nickel slots. The restaurant at the top (Top of the World) was awesome! It rotates while you eat so you get to see the entire city. At night it's just spectacular.
If we go [edit] again [/edit], we'll probably stay at either the Mirage, Treasure Island, Venetian, Excaliber, or New York New York. Those are a lot more expensive, but they're right in the heart of the strip and look nicer.

I've stayed at Treasure Island....which is next to the Mirage and Bilagio (SP). It was a great place to stay because of its location and price.

I went to Las Vegas during this past July 4 weekend. Like you, I'm not a big gambler, went more to see the sights and sounds. We stayed at the Las Vegas Hilton cuz it was the cheapest 4 star hotel there (according to Expedia.com) and "within walking distance to The Strip". Bah, don't believe any of that crap. If you're not on the Strip, you might as well get used to calling a taxi or taking the god-awful Strip Trolley. You'll definitely want a hotel right on the Strip, the best location seems to be the middle where Bellagio, Bally's, Caesar's Palace, and the Flamingo Hilton are. That puts you smack dab in the middle, within walking distance to both ends of the Strip. However they are VERY busy, with tons of crowds in the lobby/casino area.

The ends are a little quieter, Mandalay Bay is at the south end and is absolutely gorgeous. Their pool area could pass for a water park. I'd probably stay there when I visit Vegas again. The Rio was nice, but the shuttle that connects them to Harrah's leaves every 45 minutes or so, so it could be a long wait if you get in line at the wrong time. Their Seafood Buffet was awesome though.

Again, I'd just get a room in one of the middle Strip hotels. Don't worry about what's actually inside your hotel, you'll be visiting all the other Strip hotels to see their sights and attractions. Being in the middle of everything just gives you more time to see everything (and believe me, you still won't see it all).

I stayed at Barbary Coast during the last week of June 2001. Nothing fancy at all about the hotel (it doesn't even have a pool!), but the location and rates are great. I ended up spending $45/night while there, and it's right next to Flamingo, Bally's, Bellagio, Caesar's etc., right on the strip.

The Bellagio Baby! There is no alternative. It is the epitome of opulence. Pure decadence. It WILL make you spend lots of $$$!!!

I've stayed at a bunch over the past few years, here's my choices:

MGM -- Big property, lots to do, good overall place to stay.

Aladdin - Big and beautiful bathrooms inside of rooms. Free in-room ethernet connection.

Paris - a bit overpriced but it's dead center on the LV strip.

Stay away from Caesars for now -- massive construction going on.

Bellagio & Venetian are more luxurious but you'll be paying for it, as everything on the property costs $$$$.

Would not recommend Mirage -- they've gone downhill quite a bit and its age is sadly showing.

It really depends on what you're looking for. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. What's your budget, age, type of room you're looking for, activities enjoyed... Check out http://www.cheapovegas.com/ for some good and acurate reviews of all the hotels. Nows a great time to book, hotels are empty so rates are low, as are airfares. Just stay away COMDEX week.

I was there 3 weeks ago on my annual trip. The alladin is a great hotel, not too expensive, and it is right in the middle of the strip. Central location is definately key b/c you walk most places there.
