these will be channel B's on my Onkyo HT-SR800 so since there is no sub, i'll need awesome bass coming out of these.

i'll be putting these in my bedroom, appx 16' x 12'.
budget is about $100-150 for a pair. size is not a big issue, but obviously to a certain extent. otherwise i would get floor standing speakers.

The HT-SR800 has a sub

And for $100-$150 you aren't going to find bookshelfs that go below 65-80 Hz/

I built some bookselfs that go a bit below 40 Hz but they are large and expensive.

the sub won't be in the bedroom. and if it's like other receivers i've demo'd, it won't be on if i select only ch B.

the ch A 5.1 setup (7.1 if i decide to use teh rears) will go in the living room with the plasma. ch B will be just the 2 bookshelf spkrs.

so what's the best bookshelfs i can do at that price range?

go to a local home theater store. Premium Klipsch models, Paradigm, B&W, and other brands will be typically demo'd there. You might find a good deal, and there is typically a little haggle room in those types of stores. And things might just be 'on sale' to help encourage purchase. ;) So don't get sticker shock if you find a pair of bookshelves for $180 or $200. Might be able to get them into the $150 range. MAYBE. That's not guaranteed, and if it's a $200 pair, you might have to meet half way.

The JBL E-20 have great bass for the size. Very good quality. Don't know if they are still made but the cheapest I got them for (bought a few pairs at various times) was 100 bucks a pair. Highest I saw them for was 189 at BB I think. Anyway, they sound great, handle a lot of power and built like a tank.

definitely would prefer new, unless it's mint.

so far i'm liking the insignia's. it has lower frequency response, bigger woofer and is getting great reviews.

they would be nice if i had a sub, but judging by the smaller woofer and 60Hz lower limit, the insignia's would thump harder.

Athena LS-100 have a 5.5" woofer and claims 55Hz-20kHz. They're $100 + ~$25 shipping.

I have older Athena B1.2 bookshelves, also with a 5.5" woofer but not quite as low frequency response at 60Hz. I was surprised at how much bass they had playing by themselves though I was testing them with music, not movies. I'd imagine the LS-100 speakers would be fairly similar.

Oh and just to make things more complicated... you could use speaker level inputs on a subwoofer and get a 2.1 system going in the other room.

With the system you have now, the subwoofer is connected to an RCA output on the receiver as it should be for your surround sound setup.

For this secondary output, you could run the B speaker wire output to a subwoofer with speaker wire inputs which would take the low frequency signal off of it and then you'd take the speaker outputs from the sub and run those to the speakers.

Not all subwoofers have this connection type though.

For example, something like this
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe...fm?&Partnumber=300-633
(when it's on sale and has free shipping for ~$125)
would allow you to connect it up via the speaker wire outputs from your receiver's B output and then you'd hook up your speakers to the subwoofer.

You could then adjust the subwoofer's frequency controls to integrate well with your speakers.
