Need recommendation on a laptop

I'm interested in purchasing a new laptop. A new hobby I want to explore and get into is wardriving and learning how to use linux.

I would also like something as light as possible, I don't need an OS, or a cd-rom/dvd rom or a good video card.

I was thinking about an older sony vaio, maybe around 600mhz with a 10" screen, but I was wondering about any recommendations that you all may have.

Main goal is to run linux applications, browse the web, write up some text documents occasionally and perform wireless network analysis programs fairly quickly.

Thank you for any advice.

One thing to do is make sure the hardware is supported...I think the wireless modules dell's use don't have linux drivers (i think the Dell 1350,1450s, not 100% sure) So it's something to watch out for 😉

thank you for that headsup!

You can get a Toshiba 3180CT for 400$ on E-bay. They're light, and Toshiba is much higher quality than Sony. Best of all, Toshiba has unusually large support for Linux; in fact, there is a sprawling community of Linux-using laptop owners.
Best of luck,
Cheesehead.
