I built a machine for a friend a few years back (400mhz cellery) and she calls me for everything that goes wrong, which is ok in this case bacause she is cool. She tells me the rig will not even turn on after the latest lightning storm here. I wlaked her through a few things over the phone and it appears to be dead - i.e. no power.

Assuming it is the power supply and assuming I will pay for a new one and not charge her (they are cheap enough), I was thinking of putting my generic 300 watt that came with my Enlight 7237 in her case and buying a new one for myself. I want something that will run the latest chips. As of today, I am thinking of going 1.4 T-Bird, Epox, DDR, etc. I also have 3 hard drives, GF2, CDR,DVD, Zip, 2 case fans, lots of USB and the usual PCI cards. Believe it or not, my generic 300w has not given me any problems.

Any recommendations on a new ps?

Thanks,

LJ

Personally, I think the best you can get is the Enermax 431. The Antec 400W is also nice, but not a nice as the Enermax. They are ~$80 shipped from Newegg.

Antec or Enermax 350w or above is what I would choose, other brands like Sparkle are also good.

I love my Enermax 451, 430Watt.
Tons of juice.
like 40A on +3.3V, 28A on +5V and 17A on +12V IIRC.
Nice clean signals to, and it also has fairly quiet fans.

the 300W flavor ps from Antec, Enermax, and Sparkle is what you want. All nice--no crazy power spikes. I promise you'll be fine with a 300w ps for what you're running.

You said it yourself...your generic 300w ps didn't blow up on you. Again, your computer will run the majority of its time at around 200W or so...you just get a 350w ps if you're paranoid that you'll spike well over the average running wattage.

But it's your $$ ... do what you want to do. After all, you might need a 350 or 400+ when you're building your next dream machine. ;)
