need recommendation of a good chipset fan

i have a msi k8n neo4 platinum with a nforce 4 chipset. lately the chipset fan has been making buzzing noises when i start up the computer but goes away eventually once i boot the computer.i am thinking about replacing this fan but don't want to spend too much since this is already an outdated board. what is a good chipset fan that is cheap and low profile so i can still fit my 8800gts 512mb

http://www.svc.com/vc-re.html works well. I had fan problems with severa other models especially from vantec.

I had that exact board in the past and using a passive cooler (had 2 zalman models and a thermalright) wasnt working out for me because HD's blocked airflow from the front of the case.

so that fan would work for a chipset correct? becausse it describes it as being a vga cooler
edit: nvm, i see it on the title

Back in the days I slapped a ZALMAN ZM-NB47J $4.50 on P965 intel chipset (rated at 333FSB = 1066 effective FSB). Notice how it doesn't have a large footprint either.

I was able to overclock the motherboard after to 500FSB or 2000 effective FSB.

Don't forget to apply decent thermal paste like TX-2 or MX5 or AS5, etc.

but then if you look at a picture of my motherboard, the fan is right next to the pci-e slot. this is what i am talking about. see how the fan is just right next to the slot?

Those of you recommending a passive sink for OP's nf4 northbridge, did you measure temps? In an antec solo with all possible fan slots filled, it idled at 70-80c. Even a thermalright hr-05 sli was too hot to keep a finger there. The zalmans were simply a joke in my experience.

Passive doesn't go well with nForce4/nForce4 Ultra chipsets. I know this from experience because I fried my nForce4 Ultra board using a Zalman NBF47 a couple weeks ago. I actually bought two of those NBF47 buggers because I have two boards that needed replacement. After frying the first board, I don't think I'll put it onto my parents' nForce4 board. You need active cooling for the nForce4s, at the sacrifice of noise. 🙁

Wow I didnt know NF4 chipsets ran this hot!

Either way, looks like the Zalman solution is out of the question given the positioning of the PCIe slot. This probably needs a Thermalright HR-05 SLI (that extends out of the way of the gpu) with a fan on it. But spending $25 on a northbridge heatsink + fan seems excessive.

Yeah, for $35 you could find an SLi board with passive cooling already installed. That's what I had to do after my KN8 Ultra died.

Hmm, I put the fanless Zalman NB cooler on 2 NF4 boards and both are kicking strong with no issues.

my opinion its the best chipset fan you can get until you step up to the HR-05 series from thermalright.

🙁 I must've failed to mount it correctly or something then because mine got hot to the touch, I shut it down and then never booted again.

yeah i guess i'll go with the evercool since the hr-05 doesn't seem to fit anything else besides the nforce 4 so its a waste of money if i decide to upgrade my whole cpu/motherboard combo to intel

alright. i have just installed the fan but a few fitting issues popped up. when i mount the fan, the pins sit diagonally and not straight. it's as if the pins are not far enough apart. here are some pictures to show what i am talking about. it has been pretty solid on the motherboard and shows no signs of potential pop-off. is this a problem?

I guess that as long as they're in there and the heatsink is making proper contact with the chip, it should pose no problem at all.
