Whaddya mean can't reinstall Windows on an HP/Compaq?

Nearly all of 'em ship w/restore CDs in the box, but if they don't (some XP units), then the restore is on a hidden partition that you invoke by pressing an F-key during POST. You can usually install an off-the-shelf copy of W98SE/W2K/XP by using the drivers available on the restore CDs or support site.

I say buy a Dell. They have a couple of nice cheap systems available. Micron also used to be very good, but I'm not sure if they are any longer. I do know however, that they use AMD's chips, so it's not bad to check them out.

Why doesn't he want custom built?

Igo,
The main reason he doesn't want a custom system is that he wants tech support. If something goes wrong, he wants to be able to pick up the phone and call somebody at a service center to get it resolved. If it can't be resolved by phone, he wants to be able to ship it back to them to have it worked on OR have it worked on on-site. He's not very technical when it comes to the computers (and neither am I - but I like trying to be), so I agree with him that the tech-support would be good. I'm really thinking that if anybody can suggest a good local computer in the Orange County, CA area he'll likely go to them - as long as they offer good tech support.
