Need recommendation for DC project

This weekend I picked up a couple of Dell PowerEdge 6450 servers with idea being to consolidate the parts for one decent box. What I've now got is a Quad PIII Xeon 700(1meg) with 8 Gig of ram! 😀

I'm still trying to decide which O/S to put on it. I have valid licenses for 2000 Advanced Server & 2003 Server. And of course there's always the Linux option, though I'm still learning it.

Anyway, I'm curious to know if there's any of the project that are more focus on RAM as I have that in abundance, as opposed to processor power, since Xeon 700s just aren't the cat's meow anymore.

Well I'd avoid any project that uses optimized apps, such as seti. Those projects are going to get the biggest boost from fast/new hardware.

The project most dependent on RAM speed rather than raw CPU (to a certain degree) that I know of is ClimatePrediction.net. I noticed that on my P4 2,8 HT. Running two models at the same time raises the time considerably instead of running one model and another type of BOINC application. 🙂

CPDN recommends minimum 1.6 GHz computer, so not sure it's a good fit... Still, with 8 GB memory, HADAM3-model should be an excellent fit, if you manages to get it to run at all...

I don't know if it needs that much RAM, but the DIMES project doesn't require much in the way of hardware:

System Software Requirements: (Recommended)
Java Virtual Machine 1.5+ installed (jre-1.5+).
Hardware Requirements: The Hardware must have ability of support Java Virtual Machine 1.5 and above (jre-1.5+).

Grab one of the cheap Nvidia 8800GT (or any CUDA ready NV card) video cards that are being hawked all over the place and you can fold like a madman (Folding@Home). They use some CPU, but don't require today's latest and greatest by any means. Pretty close to set it and forget it systray installation.

Have they come out with an AGP version? I seriously doubt the server he has is using PCI-E SLI.

🙂

I miss the old RC5-64 days, when it would run on anything from a 486 on up to the fastest processors. I crunched that project on everything from a 486 on up to an Intel 1Ghz Centrino? M (IIRC, it was my laptop, and it really really banged out the WUs. Almost as much as the IBM quad processor 700mhz server running 24/7. :Q

SETI Classic was pretty forgiving as well, if you didn't mind how long it took to crunch a WU. 🙂

Dag nab those new fangled gizmos..... I can't find parts for my Model T either.

😛

Well, it's looking more and more like I'll need to go the Linux route, as I just realized that 2000 Adv Server tops out at 4 Gig of ram(I have 8 Gig), and the 2003 license is already allocated to another machine. :/

BTW, I've also got a Dell PowerEdge 2650 (dual p4 1.8) that I'll be trying out shortly too. Dell isn't my 1st choice for servers, but at $25.00 for this one, I'm not complaining. 😀

Ray's suggestion of DIMES could be interesting if you use VMware Server for Linux and create a bunch of virtual machines all running DIMES. You should be able to easily get 16+ VMs on that box running DIMES, maybe more.
