Like the title says ...

Buying a camcorder for my bro and his wife for Christmas. Obviously digital would be the way to go, but that's too high tech for them. So I'm looking at VHS or 8mm. Which format and what models do you guys recommend? Read somewhere that 8mm had better audio?

TIA ...

This one rocks, but is near $1,000. VHS sucks from top to bottom. Full size VHS is way too big. The VHS-C can only record for 20 minutes at SP on normal tape, 30 minutes using thin tape or 40-60 minutes at SLP. At best it still can't compare to the picture or sound of 8mm, which can record on a smaller tape for 2 hours at better resolution!

Playing back the tape from an 8mm is as easy as plugging into the inputs on the back of your VHS VCR and selecting Line-In. Slap in a blank VHS tape and hit record. You'll have a full size VHS copy in the same time it takes to watch it!

VHS-C camcorders have come down in price quite a bit, you can get one for about 300 nowadays
