HI, I need a recommendation for a good but cheaply priced newsgroup service. Since COMCAST is taking over AT&T Broadband they have a contract with Newsgroup service Giganews and they limited downloads to only 1gig per month. I download more than 1 gig a day! So, I was wondering if any of you out there know of a good newsgroup service that has unlimited downloads that are low priced or a service that has at least 40gig/month service for under $30-$40

Easynews is the best IMO, but it's $10 for 6GB which is pretty steep.

They have awesome retention and speed (~1.5 MegaBYTES per second) plus the Web Interface which makes downloading really easy.

try teranews.com

it's kinda cheap with good retention rate ( about 10 days).

I have 750 meg per DAY limit account. which is better than 1 Gig per month from Comcast/giganews.

Now that I switched to Verizon DSL, which have their own free USENET server it doesn't matter now.

If you are downloading binaries, you can get 1 cd in about 2-3 days with teranews depending on the size.

There is also usenetserver, unlimited downloads for $14.95 a month, retention is about 3 days for binaries and the servers can be flaky at times, but a good value.

Easynews is best. They also have some kind of deal where if you participate in the united devices program you'll get extra bandwidth.

usenetserver if you don't want limits. easynews if you don't download a lot of binaries. I'd use up the easynews limit in about a day.

DVD images...each one is like 4.3 gigs. They add up quick.

I mostly download Japanese Animation episodes and sometimes asian/jpop music vids and mp3s. I approximate my download usage to be about 400mb - 2gigs a day.. O_O :Q

I was thinking of getting DSL, but that would cost me about $50 a month just for newsgroups services. I already have Cable using AT&T's Ultralink connection.

BTW. Just how flaky is Flaky when talking about UsenetServer?

I've been using usenetserver for a while and haven't had any complaints with it. The retention isn't as good as it once was (but then again I was chaining 2 servers together then), but it works incely.

I got another 500 megs of downloads queued.
Going at the max of my DSL though.
I need a faster internet connection / more HD space.

I subb'd to usenetservers today and found it to be great... i get 3Mbps, the binary groups had stuff from bout 3-4 days ago (so they don't hold it too long) otherwise it's great, espically if you check it daily and grab what you want when it's new.

Easynews, I used too and is good if you missed something, they hold files like 50 days and the speed with webdownload was about 350kb/sec.

Anyone who uses usenetserver.com got the list of the servers?

oooh.. I think I will go with usenetservers... Gonna go read the user agreement first to see how many people can use it. I wonder if I and my brother can use it if he is on another computer....

its a good choice if your a big downloader. Since I'm always in the GB / week region. (Damn DSL), I need unlimited downloads more.

I don't know what that means either but I've downloaded 316.87 megs of data since I start my downloads and I have about 200 more to go.

I wonder...
c. The Company will provide access to the Service. Single End User license is granted to one individual. Client agrees that he will not share his password with another individual and that he will not use his client privileges on more than one computer or terminal simultaneously. If Client software may accessed from more than one simultaneous connection. This is permissible up to a limit of 6 ports or connections, depending on account type.

I use Xnews and you can queue and download things from different newsgroups at the same time... By reading the terms of use, does it mean that if I queue and download from 6 different newsgroups I should be okay, but if I download 7 I will be violating the terms of use..??? Maybe I am getting confused by the "ports or connections" thing... Can anybody enlighten me?

Thanks for this info, even though these posts are from 3 months ago, they still hold true...

Easynews 6 gb limit sucks. I didn't think I'd get even near it. Now that my isp's newsgroup server is going to crap(VERY slow downloads, 24 hour cache), I already went over the limit in a week on easynews... Looks like I'll be looking into usenetserver.com, 3-4 days would be more then enough for me to find what I need... Maybe I'll keep easynews also, just in case there are some files I miss...

Easynews is superior if you want to be able to find files.
Even in high traffic areas you have at least 2-3 weeks retention at 99%+ completion.
The very good web interface is a big plus, saving you from downloading TONS of headers.

Usenetserver is good if you catch the releases THE DAY THEY ARE POSTED. Retention is SUCK at usenetserver, and completion is a fair bit below Easynews.

I like easynews, but they need to allow more bandwidth! :( I'd be happy to pay a little more for more bandwidth, but they don't even give that option...
