Need rec for gaming/vr machine

Going to build a new machine. What would the recommended CPU be to meet high demand games. Plan on doing a 1080 ti machine. Was thinking i5-7600k or should I go balls out and get a Core i7-6850K?

4 Thread i5's are much less interesting for a modern high end build when you have Ryzen 6C/12T in the same price bracket. Many here also consider Ryzen to have killed the value in the HEDT line. Although much of this depends on whether you will be overclocking.

Overclocking? Any particular games?

This is why some of us think nVidia is just recommended out of habbit...
If you want a high end, or even mid/high end, card nVidia is the only option, and has been for nearly a year now.

OP, the biggest improvement, as someone else suggested, would be to upgrade the video card to a 1080/1080Ti, especially since your 980 has only 4gb of vram. Your cpu is still very competent, and faster than ryzen in a lot of games. If you feel you must upgrade the cpu, I would not buy a 6850K. Skylake HEDT will be out soon as will a Coffee Lake mainstream hex core. Both should offer better IPC and overclocking than the 6850k.

BTW, what is your resolution? For 1080p, I should think your current system is very competent, and you would see little benefit from an upgrade. If you want to go higher resolution, your biggest need will be more gpu grunt.

Yeah... I thought it was amusing some people recommend nVidia in the CPU forum to someone asking advice about CPUs; a person who appears to have already chosen nVidia.

But I guess someone with your posting history will find a way to paint AMD's competitors in the best light possible. OP should be aware some people giving "advice" appear averse to certain companies who actually have viable (and sometimes superior) options with regard to CPU purchasing.

Do you have any objective data to dispute my post, or is a personal attack the best you can do?

Wait it out if you want to play in the HEDT arena. I'd at least wait for both Intel and AMD to launch their products and then make a buying decision once reviews are out.

What monitor do you have?

What's up with all the ♦ in your rigs sig?

I thought ryzen wasnt coming unto late 2017 early 2018 or was that just the threadripper? Im totally down for a ryzen machine.

Not an upgrade just a new machine. On this machine everyone said go for upper i5 and cut that cost to put into something else.

I am thinking about OC this time. Never have in the past but I want to water cool as the machine might be in a cabinet. It will have ventilation but still its tucked away.

I plan on the

ASUS ROG-STRIX-GTX1080TI-O11G-GAMING GeForce 11GB OC Edition VR Ready 5K HD Gaming HDMI DisplayPort DVI Overclocked PC GDDR5X Graphics Card

This is my 1st draft

yeah to get that CPU/MB at microcenter is 78.15 cheaper. Theres one about an hour from me. Ill be buying in a couple weeks hopefully it will still be there.

I think that Ryzen should be better for VR. Many people report more consistent frames in gaming, with a Ryzen rig, and some frametime graphs that I've seen, seem to back up that assertion.

You might not get top FPS with Ryzen (although that's debatable the higher in res that you go, but you'll get more consistent frames. That's my understanding, anyway.

I dropped some coin the other night on a Ryzen R5 1600, and an ASRock B350 board. Seemed like a decent deal for $300. (No real savings over and above retail, just that the retail cost was not too bad.)

Newegg currently has a combo deal for a Fata1ity-branded board ($100) and an 1600X ($250) for $305, see Hot Deals for the thread.

I missed a lot of questions.

Im using a Samsung UN65KS8500 Curved 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD as a monitor.

No particular games but want to maximize my VR experience. Maybe Shadows of mordor 2, plus my games like BAK, Witcher 3, RE7 maxed out with all the hairworks on.

I might OC soon, never done it before so im a little shy. That will be a custom WC system if I do it.

I can wait a little bit but I think I will always be "waiting a bit" for something better. Everything out now is where I think I want to be so I am good with now. Will have everything together in about two weeks and will start ordering parts then. So I have a little time to pick and choose.
