Okay, I just plugged a SCSI Card (Adaptec 2940U) into my motherboard to test and make sure it works before I ship it out to the person who purchased it from me. However, when my computer boots it only gets to the part where it prints "press CTRL A to select device" or something like that and it hangs. Does anybody know what is wrong? When I press control A nothing happens. Basically, my computer freezes at that part. I have a shuttle ak31A motherboard if that makes a difference. Also, i have nothing plugged into the scsi card if that makes a difference. Is there anyway for me to verify that my scsi card works? it was working fine along with my plextor when i pulled it all out a while back. but that was with a different computer setup. so i am not sure whether it is my computer setup that is incompatible or if i somehow messed up my scsi card.

thanks,
chris

Have you tried pulling everything else out of the system (besides the graphics card) to see if it's a compatibility issue?

you mean pull everything out but the scsi card and then graphics card. i know there are no other incompatibilities since my system boots just fine without the scsi card...

Yes it sounds like the IRQ that the scsi card is trying to use is being used by something else as well. Usually the best way to get it working is to do as was mentioned above. Strip all other cards out, except the graphics card and the scsi, and try that. Moving the scsi card around in slots if it continues to do the same thing in the slot it is in. Once you get it booting past the scsi card then add in the other cards. For whatever reason that seems to be the best way to get it working. <Mutters something about PFM>

Yes as Cuular agreed, it sounds like a conflict with something else in your system. Since you just need to verify that the card is working you really don't need to figure out what it is conflicting with. If you pull out everything other than the SCSI card and the graphics card and the card works, then it works and it just does not agree with something else in your system.

Cuular's advice about trying to use different slots is a good idea too. However, it most likely does not matter with only two cards in your system. One of the slots shares an IRQ with the AGP slot though. On most motherboards it is the slot right next to the AGP slot.

If you actually had to figure out what it was conflicting with I would add one card at a time until the system starts having problems again. Then you know which two cards are conflicting and change around settings in the BIOS or move them around in different slots.

Have you tried it in a different system?

I'd say after all that, and if it doesn't work in a different system then the card is toast.
