I'm new to the whole getting my own domain website thing. I thought I register for server space at RippleHost and then a domain name at Godaddy. Well, when I was about to sign up for ripplehost, it says Domain name:www._____ and then the order button. So do I even need Godaddy then?

First off use namecheap. I've used godaddy before and namecheap is simply better and lets you have a little more control over your domain. Buying your domain name from a domain seller is usually cheaper than buying one from your host which would usually run about $15. Just enter the domain name in the field that you are buying from godaddy or namecheap.

I guess then my question really concerns ripplehost. I click on the buy new account button and I get a screen that tells me to enter in a domain name and says I can't switch it. I just want server space? so do I just type in the name I registered with godaddy?

When I registered with Namecheap/e-rice today, here's how I did it.

Went to namecheap.com, ordered domain, got it confirmed and in my account

Went to e-rice, ordered hosting.

Got the welcome email from e-rice

Took the DNS server addresses from E-rice's welcome email, went to namecheap's control panel, updated dns server in their records.

Currently waiting for DNS to refresh so I can start uploading stuff to the hosting account.

I imagine you'd go through a similar process with ripplehost. I went with e-rice because the control panel isn't all that important to me, plus you get 150mb storage/3gb traffic as opposed to 100/1gb at ripple.

I'm just confused on the part that says ...Warning: After purchasing your account the domain name can not be changed. ... It seems like I should be allowed to sign up and then choose my dns server, or rather my domain name, whenever I want, along with being able to change it.

What they mean is this.

Say you register www.111.com today and associate it with your ripplehost account. Later, you register www.222.com and want to use your ripplehost.com account for hosting it. They won't let you drop 111.com and use 222.com in it's place, you'd have to buy another account.

I think e-rice will let you switch among domain names within reason. The FAQ says something about them allowing it, but if you want to do it too frequently, it'll cost you.

It is NOT required to have a domain when you order RippleHost.com webhosting but your URL will not be pretty, it will be www.ripplehost.com/~rhxxx

1) First purchase your domain from Godaddy or Namecheap (they offer the same server just two different companies)
2) Then you sign up for web hosting with ripplehost, e-rice or whoever
3) RippleHost will not allow you to change your hosted domain, even if you do a typo. So make sure that it's something you REALLY want and do not typo it, otherwise you're screwed.

When you can hit the "construction" page or whatever they place in there by default with a browser. Might take longer to propogate through all the different ISPs. Thus, you might be able to access it at work, then go home and not be able to access it. This would only occur for a day at most, and then you'd be able to access it from everywhere.

They probably sent you a temp ip you can use to upload stuff while the DNS is being propogated around the web. In the next 24-48 hours, your actual domain name will point to that area.

If you register your domain with NameCheap first, then sign up for RippleHost then update your DNS name servers on NameCheap correctly ... should be working the next day.
