This morning I woke up to a tripped circuit breaker and after I reset it I found that my computer wouldn't start and I'm willing to bet highly that it's because the PSU is fried.

I've been using an Antec Truepower Trio 650W and I've gone through about three of them so I'm sick and tired of buying "junk" and wanted something really good.

Here is my equipment:

* Intel C2D E8400 @ 4.2 GHz
* P5B Deluxe Motherboard
* nVidia 8800GTX 768MB (requires 2 6-pin PCI-E power connectors)
* Creative Labs X-Fi XtremeMusic
* Five (5) SATA hard drives (two WD raptors)
* One (1) SATA DVD-RW

I'm really, really fed up with the Antec power supplies so I want something good.

What is the BEST powersupply that I can buy? (within reason of course) I'm willing to pay extra for something that is really good quality.

I might be upgrading the video card (GTX 260?) so I might want something with four (?) PCI-E power connectors.

Currently I'm looking at the CORSAIR CMPSU-1000HX 1000W (http://www.newegg.com/Product/...?Item=N82E16817139007)

Also, what are the chances that my PSU killed my motherboard and all attached components? Do these things have a fail-safe built-in? It's really scares me that it tripped my circuit breaker and now won't start at all...

The Corsair HX1000 is going to be major overkill for an 8800GTX, much less a GTX 260.

Anything Corsair in the 500w range would do nicely.

Yep, heck a Corsair HX520 is still "overkill" and should be basically silent. Your system will not use over 200-250 watts at most. Even the GTX260 will only bump it up to maybe 300. However I'd say if you feel like you need extra power, just get a Corsair HX-620. If you want to look around there's a lotta options in the 500-600watt range from Enermax, Silverstone, Seasonic, etc.

Thanks again for all of the suggestions everybody.

It turns out my power supply was the only thing that died so thankfully everything else in the PC is fine.

However, I'm still a little unsure on what PSU to order... I obviously don't need 1000 watts but I do like how the Corsair is modular (but only with that model). I've also found it on Amazon.com for $189.99 after rebate which is apparantly a great price.

...but let me ask my original question a different way: If you had $150 - $200 to spend on a power supply and wanted the best one possible, which specific one would you order? The only thing I need is for the PSU to work with my current machine and anything in the future (650 watts I'd say is minimum).

I that price range the Signature 650W is one of the best :p Some Antec PSUs are very good quality.
Antec True Power New is also good
Enermax Modu 82+ 625 or Liberty Eco 620W
Zalman ZM-750HP
tons of Silverstones and Corsairs in that range
PC Power and Cooling 610 and 750 Silencers

1000W? Seriously? :confused:

If you went over 750 you would be insane, and even that is overkill.

Step 1:
- buy lighter fluid
- remove old TruePower psu and put in backyard away from anything flammable
- pour lighter fluid on psu
- light with match
- wait for flames to die and dispose of burnt-out psu

Step 2:
- buy a high quality 500W - 650W psu. No 1000W for you, sir.

Step 3:
- be happy :)

Honestly I don't understand one thing. Why does anyone want to OVERspend on a psu? Why not buy the best thing you need for the cheapest price? I'd always pick the $50 500w psu if it was great (sadly they aren't). It's not like you can't buy a new psu 3-5 years later if needed...with greater efficiency. Buy a good 500-600w like mentioned and be happy.
