one day my hard drive decided to crap while flashing my video card bios. it said cand find system.sys i think, i found through dos that 1/2 the system32/config folder was missing and that i was getting SMART warning while booting.

so i have a new drive with winxp on it, and im just having a hard time figuring how to copy my files from old hdd to new one. the dos disk i created with ntfs dos does not have the xcopy command in it. i need to copy folders, i cant copy thousands of pics one by one. dos from within xp does have the command, but windows cant read the disk and gives me "disk currupt and unreadable"

is there a program that can get the data from windows, or can someone show me a dos boot disk program that contains xcopy. forget fixing it (if possible) i just want a clean slate with a new drive

thanks, robb

the one from windows gives me "this program needs to be run from windows"

im searching for a version of a dos boot disk that has xcopy, no luck so far

i decided to make a vhd, since i have limited room i placed it back on the bad hard drive after i reformated it thinknig all was good, nope the hard drive is actually crapped. so the vhd could be read on the good drive fine with winimage. i can open it in winimage while its on the bad drive, but it freezes upos extraction. in windows and dos i cant copy that 146gig file back to the good drive (in dos i think because it's too big, it pauses for a few secs then says 0 files copied).

if there is no alternate winimage program, or some way to let dos copy bigger files, im just going to have to try and make an virtual drive of the virtual drive. virtual pc didnt seem to help.

im such an idiot, i am going to need a 3rd 160 gig drive for this

im currently trying data recovery programs to try and get the .vhd off the bad drive, but they all suck.

The best is Encase, but i wouldn't walk that walk if i were you.
Try Spinrite6 and GetdatabackNTFS.
If neither of those do it, then, you have a problem.

i got a new drive and made an image of an image, got down to my files, and the whole "my docs and settings" folder is empty, which was what i was mostly woried about. i think it was deleted when i tried to reinstal xp, i got "this may delete youy documents" but it didnt make sense that it actually would wipe them out, and not jsut leave them alone. im sad i lost all my pics from 8th grade to current day 🙁
