Hi.

first of all, sorry if my english spelling is flawed, but im from Denmark :)

My build is nearly finished i think, but im not sure how big my power supply needs to be.

i got:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2.40 GHz Quad Core processor

4x Kingston DDR2, 800 MHz, 1GB RAM (4 sockets)

3x Deskstar T7K500, 320 GB, 7200 rpm, 16 MB, SATA II

BFG GeForce 8800GTS OC, 640 MB, PCI-E

on board sound

some noice control on the CPU, the case and the case fan...

Now i can get a Cheiftec 400 / 500 / 550 / 650 W ? all of them are 27 dB

Any other comments on the build is ofcourse welcome.

get neither :p Get the antec earthwatt 500w, the corsair vx450, corsair 520hx or something like that. No idea how good/bad chieftec's are, but those are better and still affordable ^^

Oh and you should try asking this in the power supply forum ... Or wait for a mod to move it ...

Yes, there is a Power Supply section now... Unless the Chieftec PSUs are made by a good PSU manufacturer then skip them as mentioned above. The PSU is the cornerstone of a stable system, so don't skimp on yours. All the PSUs mentioned by Marc are made by Seasonic if you can't get those brands there. About a 430W, quality-brand PSU will be adequate for your system with some headroom for future additions. Unless you have the time to do the homework required, it is best to always buy your PSU with the actual manufacturer's brand on them. Many PSUs are not made by those who put their label on them - they are outsourced and rebadged.

They reason these are the ones listed are because i could get everything from the same dealer, assembled and tested and a bit cheaper, but they only got those Chieftec and a LC-POWER silent giant green 550W..

Are they _bad_ ? or are they just "not as good" ?

Ask on the power supply forum mate, theres some really knowledgable people around that place. What I know is what I hear from them, or have found out by reading their reviews. www.jonnyguru.com could also help out, just look for the PSU's you mentioned, and if they pop up, check what jonny has to say about them. He also posts in the PSU forum btw, so perhaps he'll tell you what he thinks of chieftec psu's.

Btw, it's better to buy a qaulity PSU from somewhere else, and pay an extra 7-10$ for extra delivery, then to skimp on the PSU and buy a crappy one just to save the extra delivery costs.

I know that L&C PSUs are true bottom-feeders. If the Chieftec PSUs have the UL (looks like RU) mark on them and you can get the file number from one of them (looks like E123456 - should be just below the RU symbol), then I might be able to find out who actually makes them. If these are anything like what you're talking about, then the output on the 12V rails look hinky. My Antec 380W PSU by Seasonic has 16A+16A on its two "rails" with 28A total max on the 12V. The 500 W Chieftec claims three 12V rails at 52A total - that's very unlikely as further down the specs it shows only 320W available for them or about 27 or so Amps total. I'm really leery of unrealistic specs statements... I wouldn't chance it myself. It's your nickel, you take your chances. Ask the guy why he only stocks such 3rd-rate PSUs. That would be my clue to avoid that dealer entirely!

L-C is crap.

Chieftec's are typically Sirtec.

Mediocre at best.

Tell your local shop they need to broaden their selection.
