Hello all,

I am building a new rig this Dec and am looking to use the following components:

Scythe SCNJ-1100P cpu cooler with yateloon 120mm fan
E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz / OC'ed to 3.4 gHz
evga GeForce 8800GTX 768MB 384-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16
Crucial Technology Ballistix 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) 4-4-4-12
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic 7.1 Channels 24-bit
Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-150 274 PCI Interface Personal video recorder
BenQ 16x DVD+R Burner with light scribe
SAMSUNG SpinPoint P Series HD160JJ 160GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb
OS Windows MCE 2005 until vista becomes available

My current power supply is an Enhance 80plus 500W so the question is with this new rig will I need more? If so how much more? What model and brand?

Any help provided would be much appreciated LCD is yet to be determined Speaker system is yet to be determined. I am an FPS gamer and enjoy movies and music on my PC also if someone here sees some holes in my hardware choices please let me know thanks

That power supply should be fine unless you decide to buy a second videocard and do the SLI thing... then you will want something beefer.

The only things to consider are that for the price of the GTX alone you can buy 3 top-notch replacement units AND if the PSU fries out while running it may take said GTX along with it to the grave, so if it were me I'd give serious thought to an upgrade in the 600-700 watt range Yes this much power is a bit of overkill, but its relatively inexpensive piece of mind.

There are any number of high quality PSU's on the market, but I like this Corsair 620 watt modular unit a lot: *(made by Seasonic)

Your Enhance will power that rigg just fine!! Set the rigg up and then if things don`t work out then buy another PSU!!
You will be fine with what you have!!

Hey guys,

Thanks for the good information. Yeah I know the GTX is expensive but I'd rather have a high end gfx card as I feel it will give me the most enjoyment in the long run. I'm not looking to join the 4ghz club so I can't see the need for a cpu upgrade as yet will consider when the data is out for kentfield.

Well the spec I read for the GTX is 450 watt supply minimum as to be expected I will oc this so hopefully the 50 watts left over can handle the rest. I have $400.00 left for monitor budget any suggestions right now I'm looking at the
ViewSonic VG2230wm Black 22" 5ms DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor

The 8800GTX is not the power hungry monster many people thought it would be. Your Enhance is a very good PSU and provides plenty of power for what you intend to build.

Look here at Daily Tech's testing to get a good idea of what a high-end 8800GTX equipped system draws under full load.

When setting 450W as minimum for the PSU it does not mean that the GTX will draw 450W. Since it can draw power fro them PCIe slot and two power connectors the maximum power usage is 3x75W = 225W, which is far higher than it actually use under full load.
