Need Pet advice

My dog is doing really bad. He can't walk at the moment, he just can't use his back legs and just lays in the same spot all day long. When you pick him up and let go off support his back legs give in and he falls down

This has been going for a couple of weeks but he was still walking, but day by day its got worse and today has been the worse day off all. I carried him outside to do his business but I can't even get him to do that. Its worse now he has not pee since this morning and he has not done #2 since yesterday.

I made a vet appointment for Saturday, but going to try to take him tomorrow afternoon.

This is Dukie back in his good all days Pic

Oh by the way, he just turned 8 years old.

Update:
Just talked to the Vet, Dukie walked a little bit today which is a massive improvement since yesterday. He is taking Xrays later and I'll visit him tomorrow.

wow only 8 years old.. my dog was like that at 13 or so and then we had put him down.

yeah i know 8 seems to early. My cousins have two Cocker Spaniels also, much much older. One is half blind and they are still moving and being happy.

Hopefully the vet will have something to cure him.

Does he have bad hips or do you suspect an injury?

My dog injured his back and the vet said that he needed $2200 back surgery. I finally talked him into giving him a cortisone shot and putting him on steroids. 2 weeks later he was fine. His back was slumped down and back feet would not support him.

8 is pretty young.

He probably has hip dysplasia. My black lab/shepherd mix has it pretty bad. There are medicines that your vet can give him. Start him on chondritin, an over the counter/herbal anti-inflammitory. Works well. There is also another pain reliever that works well on the hips which is Deramax, which is from the vet. Put hot packs on his hips, along with a hot towel soaked in epsom salts. It has kept our dog able to walk for at least another year. He is 109 lbs too.....

Good luck,

Bob

My parents dog was the same way (not sure of her age) but she had to be put to sleep. She had some kind of arthritis or something like it and she couldn't even stand up.
I don't know what I'd do if that happened to my dog 🙁

My old German Shepard was the same way, and we left him liek that for 2 years. It was pure punishment now that I think about it, but after 15 years, my brother (a vetinarian) put him to rest by his own hands.

My current dog is going through the same thing, and I will probably let him lie around a bit, but he can still walk.

I have a last dog, and he is a healthy mutt, but I think I will finally stop with pets after he goes.

I know exactly what you are going through all too well... 🙁

My parents had to put my dog down during my first semester of college. She kept on having seizures and one day it was just too much. I'll always miss that dog. Good news is I got another one last year - fantastic dog (and a pound rescue!).

Best of luck to you - having to deal with a sick dog is very heartwrenching. Be glad to know you gave your pet a great life!

I took him today to the vet. He said it looks like he has partial paralysis to his back legs. Possibly a spinal disk injury and its creating fluids and putting pressure on some nerves.

He was admitted to the pet clinic and they will start a aggressive steroid therapy. Also will take x-rays. He will probably stay at the Vet till Monday. Doctor has hopes this will help him because his legs still react to nerve tests. If it doesn't help the options would be to operate or put him to sleep because the problem could continue to spread up his body.

I need a drink now...but have got to go to class.

Good luck. Since there is still some nerve function left there is a very real chance of a full recovery from hind limb paresis. Nerves tend to heal slowly, but they can heal. The bad news is that floppy eared breeds have a tendency to get ear infections. The good news is that your dog doesn't have one, otherwise the vet would have noticed.

Hopefully the therapy works for him. This was about three years ago and my dogs has been fine since. Keep us updated.

Nerve injuries in animals especially dogs and cats can be hit or miss...when they recover usually it is a full recovery but when they don't you need to sometimes face facts and have the animal put down so do keep that in mind. I wish the best for duke.

I saw him yesterday and walk him outside. He looks good, just sad that had to stay in the hospital still.

Oh by the way, about the ear thing, yes he does have infection. Doctor was going to clean him. Earlier this year he actually had a treatment to clean his ear completely with some special wax that the doctor did. Cockers have lots of issues.
