Need Pentium D alternative system

Here's my planned build

Athlon 3700
DFI LanParty NF4 UltraD
Gigabyte X800XL
1gb OCZ VX4000 (2x512)
250GB Seagate 7200.8 HD
NEC 3540 DVD+/-RW drive
Antec P-160 Case
Antec TP2 430 Watt

Umm total runs around $1350 but I need an LCD monitor so I'm looking around 1.7k at least not counting an XP-120 + fans and possibly speakers.

Basically I want a dual core alternative. I would get the 4400, but it costs 2 x 3700+s =(. Thus can someone help me construct a dual core system?

I'm basically not sure about the motherboard. It seems with Athlon 64s, DFI is king and its an almost no brainer or the Neo4, but with Intel chips I'm totally clueless ><

The price of a Pentium D could be close to the X2 system after you factor in the mobo and cpu considering the Pentium D comptabile mobos can be fairly expensive, some upwards of $200+.

I want to have 2 solutions I can pick from... Here I have a single core system laid out. I've spent like months into looking at these things my grades have dropped into the bay. DDR2 doesn't offer crazy XTREME stuff like VX so while it would be more expensive, it wouldn't be TOO much of a premium
