I'm at a friend's place, trying to install an older OEM USR 56K fax modem in XP. The modem appears to install correctly, but the system also wants a driver for PCI Simple Communications Controller Driver Update for Win XP.

Google gave me some links, but the first few charge for their drivers.

A quick reply with a link for the driver would help.

TIA

What model is the modem? Look at the circuit board for a model number.

Hi, Mech.

This is from a Gateway machine. U.S. Robotics 56K WinModem Internal (Medora). Gateway Part #6001021

Gateway has Win98 and NT drivers on their site. I tried both, and neither works in XP.

I was hoping I could dredge one up from Microsoft's Windows Update Catalog, but no dice  If it works at all (?) you might try Windows Update itself, except I'm sure that you already thought of that.

Grasping at straws a little, I suppose a guy could try a driver for another Winmodem that uses the same chipset, something like using generic nVidia video drivers for an nVidia-based video card (try saying that five times fast :D). Or just say heck with this, I'm getting a new $10 winmodem and saving $30 worth of hair. ;)

Thx anyway. The for hire sites say they have updated drivers. I was just hoping to snag a legal, free one. :)
